Target Audience: 4th Grade Teachers

This workshop provides the participants with essential teacher background knowledge and is based upon activities selected to illustrate or enhance concepts presented in the K-7 Science Processes and the Grade Four Physical Science Grade Level Content Expectations (Grade 4-Unit 2).

Everything around us is made up of something. This something is called matter. Matter is defined as any substance which takes up space, and has mass and volume. These properties can be measured.

Matter can exist in several states: solids, liquids and gases. We will examine how these states can be changed from one into another. Looking at the materials which make up our world shows us that they can be classified based on their physical properties.

We will examine two physical properties of matter (namely magnets, sound, and light). Our activities will develop the properties of conduction and reflection. Hands on activities and demonstrations will be used to examine these properties of matter. The workshop will approach each concept through our senses (Qualitatively) and using measurement (Quantative).
