Parents report that 60 percent of children under the age of 18 complain of tiredness and sleepiness during the day and 15 percent of children admit to falling asleep in school. This workshop will present participants with an overview of normal sleep patterns in childhood and adolescence and an introduction to common sleep disorders that these age groups experience. What research says about the impact of sleep on learning and behavior, the kinds of sleep problems common to children with behavioral disorders (such as ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders) will also be reviewed. Finally, critical issues in the “school start time” debate will be presented.
