ParaReading provides a foundation for understanding the literacy components all students need to be successful readers and writers. Participants will receive strategies to support students in areas of Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension and Writing. Socratic Circles are in-class discussion focused upon a particular piece of text which students have spent time reading and analyzing. Students work cooperatively to construct meaning from what they have read and avoid focusing on a “correct” interpretation of the text. This program will offer an introduction to the process of Socratic Circles and provides resources and materials to begin using the strategy immediately.

The Daily Five
Fostering literacy independence in the elementary grades. The Daily Five is more than a management system or a curriculum framework; it is a structure that will help students develop the habits that lead to a lifetime of independent literacy. Gail and Joan have practiced and refined The Daily Five in their own classrooms for over ten years. They will share new insights and strategies to make implementation even more successful in your classroom.

The Daily Café
Using The Café, the sisters present a practical, simple way to integrate assessment into daily reading and classroom discussion. The Café system, based on research into the habits of proficient readers, is an acronym for Comprehension, Acuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary. The system includes goal-setting with students, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small-group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and focusing whole-class instruction on emerging student needs.
