           2004 Central States Conference-Making Connections
Now in its 36th year, the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages joins with the Michigan Foreign Language Association to gather 1200 – 1800 foreign language professionals from a seventeen state region. The 2004 three day conference, held at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, will offer attendees a choice of 170 50-75 minute sessions as well as a choice of 26 full-day and half-day workshops.            Advance Spanish II - Winter 2005
This is a continuation for those who have taken previous spanish classes offered by the Van Buren ISD. Participants will acquire more complex grammar constructions, add to their knowledge, develop and refine speaking and listening skills. They will also continue to aquire cutltural awareness of countries whose native language is Spanish.
           Advanced Placement Spanish Language
(offered at the Leelanau School)This course will focus on curent developments and issues concerning the Advanced Placement program in Spanish Language and is intended for both new and advanced teachers of AP Spanish Language. Teachers will focus on strategies to develop language skills in L2. Several sessions will deal with the AP Spanish language exam. IN those sessions, teachers will practice holisitic scoring, grading practices, analysis and use of the rubrics that are utilized to grade the exam.
           Advanced Spanish I - Fall 2004
Participants will expand and develop new and adequate vocabulary with a concentration on classroom and school-related topics. They will also acquire complex grammar constructions and syntax; add to knowledge previously learned and to continue develop and refine speaking and listening skills; and to continue in the process of acquiring cutltural awareness of countries whose native language is Spanish.
           Advanced TPRS
Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling is appropriate for all world language classrooms, this course concentrates on the higher level skills of communication and reading, including preparing for an AP exam. Participants will leave with criteria for: selection of reading, words & phrases, length of phrases, pacing and more.

This conference is in San Antonio, Texas. The ACTFL Convention and World Languages Expo is the largest gathering of language educators in the United States with the largest exhibition anywhere of teaching materials and technology for the language profession. It is the only national event where language professionals from all levels, all assignments and all languages can come together to learn. More than 600 educational sessions covering more than 20 languages, instruction skills ranging from pre-K to graduate level, Advanced Placement workshops and sessions covering Latin, German, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, and French, as well as other general topics, new research and new ways of using research in language education.

           Basic Functional Spanish for Healthcare Providers
The goal is to have participants leave the class with the tools and ability to communicate with their Spanish-speaking patients/customers. They will learn how to ask specific questions, provide correct answers, understand customers´ requests/needs and pronounce medical terms correctly. The emphasis will be on language learning principles, conversation & clinical role playing.

           Cultural Exp: Arabic Art Collection at DIA in Det
Teachers will move from theory to application. Participants will develop lesson plans and curriculum incorporating cultural instruction into teaching experiences. Teachers will prepare students for their first field trip experience to the Arabic Art Collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

You will continue developing and refining speaking and listening skills using present, past and future tenses with an emphasis placed on the different past tenses; preterit, imperfect and present perfect, as well as the present subjunctive mood. Participants will converse about routine and non-routine activities using the grammar acquired, practice listening comprehension of a variety spoken-Spanish presented on the series, role-play and converse with members of the class in order to learn and to feel more confident in speaking Spanish and continue acquiring cultural awareness on the people and countries whose native language is Spanish.

           German American Studies in Foreign Lang Classroom
This interactive workshop is designed for K-16 teachers of German and offers an immersion setting that allows participants to maintain and expand their knowledge of German language, culture, and history of German-speaking communities. Participants are familiarized with new techniques and materials for combining the teaching of language, cultural, and historical themes.            Hands On Culture: Arabic Lang Teachers Wrksp
Arabic language teachers will participate in instructional workshops to provide participatns with the expertise and skills to effectively incorporate cultural products and practices into Arabic language teaching.            Introduction to Sign Language
The program will help school staff and parents who come in contact with hearing impaired students have a better means of communication with the child. Functional vocabulary that is used in the school and practical vocabulary of everyday life will be addressed. The program will build confidence in the learner’s ability to converse with a hearing impaired individual.
           Japanese Language and Culture for educators
This class is for educators who have Japanese children or adults in their classrooms. Participants will learn to speak basic Japanese phrases and learn about Japanese Culture.
           Keeping Teacher and Student Talk in theTarget Lang
This workshop will have two parts. The first focuses on teachers’ language use and describes strategies that teachers can use to teach in the target language, particularly in difficult contexts such as when working with beginners and teaching grammar. In addition, demonstrations of various techniques will be given including how to give directions for complex activities while speaking only in the target language. The participants will act as beginning language learners in these demonstrations. The presenter will also discuss how small amounts of English can be used effectively instead of as something to fall back on when target language use becomes difficult. The second part of the workshop will focus on student language use. Participants will be provided techniques for beginners to start speaking the target language quickly, in new contexts and using a variety of tasks. Participants again will act as students in various demonstrations of a new language, this time speaking the language. The presenter will then provide sample activities for more advanced students that will not only keep them speaking the target language but also push them to produce more advanced language. Technology in the classroom can ease your classroom management tasks, provide a change of pace for your students, provide you with an opportunity to include the target community, and provide you with easy access to written documents of students` language production. During the workshop you will learn how to use computer technology (such as course-management software, chat rooms, Instant Messaging, and websites). On the one hand you will experience the technology from a learner`s perspective at the same time you will be provided with activities for your own teaching. Finally, you will also have the opportunity to develop your own materials suited for your class. The workshop will introduce free (in case your district is unable to purchase software) as well as commercially available software programs (in case your district is considering purchase or has already purchased programs). Teachers and researchers agree that video materials can enhance the learning environment in foreign language classrooms by providing rich, contextualized input. The combination of aural and visual cues naturally makes video input more comprehensible. However, there are several uses of video that extend beyond listening comprehension activities. For example, video can be effectively used to teach grammar and in promoting output (both oral and written). This workshop will consider multiple uses of video as well as techniques for adapting authentic materials to learners of various proficiency levels. The workshop will address the following topics: choosing appropriate video materials (authentic versus scripted video materials and appropriate uses of each; sequencing a lesson with video (pre-viewing, during viewing, post-viewing); top-down and bottom-up activities for each stage of working with video; creating selective listening activities for video segments; uses of video without sound ; using video to teach grammar; using video to promote output; using video to teach cultural topics; combining video and reading materials; and using DVD with subtitles.            MODIFIED ORAL PROFICIENCY INTERVIEW TRAINING
Participants will attend intense training sessions that prepare them to actually give an Oral Proficiency Interview. They will apply the ACTFL Speaking Guidelines to a series of our own students, and give them a "Rating" on their speaking ability. This technique is to be applied in assessing ALL students in our program. Outcomes include: 1. A thorough knowledge of the ACTFL Speaking Guidelines 2.            Study of Hispanic Literature--SPAN 329
This course introduces students to the major movements and genres of Hispanic literature and to the accompanying vocabulary. Students learn how to read and evaluate literature in a second language through short prose, drama, and poetic texts,and they sharpen theirkills in critical writing and literary analysis. This course is designed to prepare students for survey and advanced-level literature courses in the Spanish Department. Oral presentations and/or research paper required. Prerequisite: Spanish 301 or concurrent registration with Spanish 301. Course may be taken for academic credit (3 semester hours) or for SB-CEUs (9). Those taking the course fo CEUs are allowed to audit the course (at a lower tuition rate). A student who audits the course will complete all assignments (except for a final exam or project) and will receive no credit on their transcript. A student may take the course for credit or as an audit for CEU´s, but not both.

           Teaching Speaking/Listening in Foreign Language
This workshop focuses on listening and speaking in foreign language classrooms through discussion and activities. Discussion topics will cover why listening in a foreign language is differnt than listening in one´s native language, and what can be done to facilitate the listening process. Pronunciation, lexical and grammatical accuracy in speaking and oral feedback from the teacher are also a focus of this workshop.
           Teaching Writing in the Foreign Language Classroom
This workshop covers several areas of foreign language writing instruction. It begins with a general discussion of how writing fits into a general skill foreign language class and the role it plays in meeting the National Standards for Foreign Language Teaching. There is some focus on essay writing including how to: 1) construct assignments; 2) create prewriting activites; and 3) give feedback on and assess assignments.
           Teaching Writing in the Foreign Language Classroom
This workshop covers several areas of foreign language writing instruction. It focuses on essay writing and how to: 1.) Construct Assignments, 2.) Create pre-writing activities, and 3.) Give feedback on and assess assignments. Examples will be presented of writing activities for beginners, controlled writing tasks, and those that target grammatical structures. This workshop provides foreign language instructors with information and ideas for teaching writing. Participants will receive hands-on experiences in creating writing examples and assesing them. An emphasis will be placed on the use of technology and how it applies to the teaching of writing.

           Teaching/ Speaking/Listening in Foreign Lang Class
This workshop focuses on listening and speaking in foreign language classrooms through discussion and activities. There are discussion topics such as 1)why is listening in a foreign language different than lsitening in one´s native language, and 2) what can be done to facilitate the listening process. Pronunciation, lexical and grammatical accuracy in speaking, and oral feedback from the teacher are also the focus of this workshop.
           TEFL/TESL Certificate K-Adult
The TEFL/TESL certificate is specifically designed for teachers who would like to teach English in foreign countries and for teachers who are teaching international students in their classrooms in the United States. This course will help the teacher to understand how language is learned and how important it is to know about other cultures. The course includes grammar, writing, speaking and listening.

           The Maya of Yucatan
This course encompasses an analysis of both historical and contemporary Yucatec Maya culture and the application of that knowledge to curriculum for the elementary and middle school levels. The course, offered to educators who teach academic content in Spanish, will be conducted primarily in this language.
           Toward Friendly Assessment in the Foreign Language
In this workshop`s discussions and activities, teachers will weave together teaching and assessment practices in a manner that leads naturally to productive learning experiences for all students. This will be accomplished by first reviewing basic principles of both traditional and nontraditional assessment, and then exploring how these principles can be applied in the development of assessment materials that align with the curriculum and state and national standards. Participants will also be given guidance and hands-on experience in the development of assessment materials that suit the local context in which they teach.
           TPRS: Teach for Proficiency thru Reading & Stories
This workshop will introduce teachers to a highly effective, holistic method (Total Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) of teaching both foreign language and English as a Second Language, which dramatically increases student achievement and interest in learning another language. This method is effective for learning any foreign language.

           Using Communicative Activities in a Grammar Curr
This workshop will focus on issues related to using communicative activities that focus on grammatical structures. It will help teachers create interesting activities that will motivate their students and contribute to an atmosphere of meaningful communication in the target language. Teachers will create meaning-based activities that will: 1.) Supplement the structural goals of the curriculum and/or textbook, 2.) Help students learn to use the targeted grammatical structures in meaningful communication, and 3.) Use authentic materials that promote student interest while still meeting the structural goals of the curriculum.
           Using Multiple Intelligences in the FL Classroom
This interactive session using a variety of hands-on examples of instructional techniques that can help students access any world language through a variety of intelligences and learning styles, such as bodily-kinesthetic, visual-spatial, and interpersonal intelligences. Participants will also be invited to share effective ideas from their world language classrooms. We will also discuss the new Michigan world languages standards and what they mean for courses and programs and explore a variety of resources for better understanding and addressing the latest Michigan standards for world language teaching in grades K-12.
           Using TRPS Strategies in Foreign Language Classes
Educators will experience the power of TPRS method firsthand through demonstrations and learn how to apply the strategies in their own program. Whether familiar or not with TPRS, participants will hone their skills and become updated on the latest TPRS and learn the importance of how TPRS strategies can help reach even the most reluctant language learners. Each participant will receive a comprehensive handbook, which includes step-by-step explanations of how to apply the steps to TPRS, sample lessons, dozens of activities for engaging students and maximizing use of the target language, and a collection of popular communicative games, activities, rubrics, helpful articles, and more!
           Vocabulary - The key to language fluency
This workshop will outline the role of vocabulary in developing second language learners` fluency. It will also focus on identifying problems learners face when they learn words and when they try to use these words to communicate their ideas.
           World Language
This one day session is an introduction of the new 1-12 curriculum. Along with the introduction of this session, it will include a complete overview of the new resources available to support the curriculum, including support materials, technology integration and assessment.
           World Language: Building Proficiency Assessments
World Language teachers will spend time collaborating with others to building proficiency assessments, which are part of the new state requirements. A focus on understanding the state proficiency standards and finding authentic materials will aid teachers in developing quality assessments.
           World Language: Reaching All Students Through The
World Language teachers will enjoy a day-long event filled with multiple professional development sessions. These sessions will include new technology for the classroom, TPRS (Total Proficiency Through Storytelling), building quality assessments, strategies for special education students in the foreign language classroom, along with many others. Sessions will be built around the five World Language strands: Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.
           World Languages - K-12 Roundtable
The World Languages Roundtable is one of the Subject Area K-12 School meetings which will provide a forum for thoughtful conversation about common purpose, curriculum, instruction, and assessment with COOR ISD area superintendents, administrators, curriculum people and teachers in the area of World Languages. Participants will discuss best practice, MDE requirements in this area, and future direction.
           World Languages and Video Streaming
World Language teachers will participate in a hands-on computer work session covering both basic and advanced video streaming applications. Teachers will have time to experiment, explore and create classroom multi-media presentations incorporating PowerPoint and live streaming.
