Substitute Authorization License Course
Session: 7587

Guest Teach in Iowa Schools with a Substitute Authorization license!

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION:

Please Note: Receiving the Substitute Authorization license is not a guarantee of employment. Districts make their own hiring and sub placement decisions. The AEA does not hire subs; you need to contact each district to become a sub.

Prerequisites:
You must have either a four year college degree or an Iowa Paraeducator license to take this course. Contact the AEA at 563-344-6481 or the BOEE at 515-281-3245 if you have questions about your eligibility to earn and use the Sub. Authorization license.**
This course is for those who DO NOT have a teaching license. Do not take this class if you have a current or expired Iowa Teaching License! Visit BOEE website for renewal info.

Course content: The four core components of the course are Classroom Management, Strategies for Learning, Diversity, and Ethics.

This 20-hour course is designed to meet the requirements to substitute teach in Iowa classrooms. Receiving a Substitute Authorization will allow an individual who holds a four-year college degree to substitute teach in grades PK-12 for no more than five consecutive days in one job assignment. An individual who has earned the Iowa Paraeducator certificate (and does not have a four-year college degree), completes the Substitute Authorization course, and receives a Substitute Authorization will be authorized to substitute ONLY in the special education classroom in which the individual paraeducator is employed for no more than five consecutive days. This special education classroom may be at the elementary level as well as the middle school, junior high school or high school level (not ELL or preschool).
