Robotics with Blockly workshop

Iowa Educators Can Be Early Adopters of the Parallax S3 Robot!

Ken Gracey, Parallax CEO and California Career Technology Education (CTE) credentialed teacher. Mr. Gracey has developed his career in educational robotics and shares his enthusiasm and experiences with students.

Registration:
1. register here on the AEA site
2. register at the Parallax registration site

The ActivityBot is a robust robotics platform. The base kit has everything you’ll need to get started with robotics, and it comes with a wealth of online Propeller C or BlocklyProp tutorials. When coupled with BlocklyProp, the ActivityBot robot becomes a fantastic learning tool for beginners. The open breadboard design also allows for easy adaptation and the addition of peripheral sensors for advanced learning opportunities.

Workshop Details:
• Bring a Windows or Mac laptop with USB programming ports. Be sure to have administrative access to the Blockly S3 programming environment.
• Most appropriate for educators in grades 7-12. Most common educators include those from Science, Math, Physics and Programming Courses.

What you will learn:
• Building and programming an ActivityBot
• Exploring BlocklyProp and SimpleIDE software for Mac, Windows, or (BlocklyProp only) Chromebook.
• An introduction to our Getting Started tutorials and Propeller Board Block Reference Help.
• Adding sensors for navigation: whiskers, infrared, ultrasonic, and phototransistors.
• Pairing our online tutorials with the BlocklyProp visual programming environment and SimpleIDE.
• Moving beyond the basic tutorials with extra programming projects and add-on hardware options.
• Understanding how best to apply the BlocklyProp and Propeller C software in semester- or year-long courses with a specific parts kit and syllabus, standards correlations, and assessment material accessible only by educators.

This is a free workshop - you will receive a new ActivityBot Robot to take with at the end of the day.
