This course is intended to provide K-12 teachers of Social Studies a working knowledge of the Iowa Core Literacy standards. Participants will examine topics such as the shared responsibility, the key shifts, the role of informational text, disciplinary literacy, use of challenging text, text-based evidence, argument, writing from sources, academic disciplinary vocabulary, and use of primary sources. This knowledge will support their implementation of the Iowa Core Literacy standards.
1. Participants will gain an understanding of their role in implementation of the Iowa Core Literacy standards for Social Studies.
2. Participants will begin to identify resources and texts to support their implementation of Iowa Core Literacy standards for Social Studies.
3. Participants will begin to identify places in the curriculum to integrate the Iowa Core Literacy standards.
