Framework for Effective Instruction for Students with Significant Disabilities - Year 2: Literacy

This workshop is open only to educators in the following districts: Northeast, Maquoketa, Camanche, Bettendorf, West Liberty, Columbus, Wilton, Louisa-Muscatine, Davenport.

The Iowa Department of Education and the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency are providing several training sessions this year to provide a framework for effective instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities. These sessions are for those who completed the course Framework for Effective Instruction for Students with Significant Disabilities held the past 3 school years.

These classrooms are typically labeled Level III classrooms in buildings and/or districts. This professional development will focus on specially designed instruction for students who participate in the “Iowa Alternate Assessment.” Participants will re-examine a framework for effective instruction that include principles of “Universal Design for Learning,” a Five-Step Process that merges the curriculum components of content, instruction, and assessment, Characteristics of Effective Instruction and Quality Indicators. Teachers will also focus on the literacy quality indicators of receptive and expressive communication, specially designed instruction, assessment and IEP goals.
