          Bullet Creative Curriculum for Preschool: Implementation Methods

This course has been cancelled.

Participants will have the opportunity to study and implement the Creative Curriculum for Preschool, a leading research-based preschool curriculum. This course will clearly define the teacher´s role in connecting content, teaching, environment, and learning for preschool children. Early childhood theory, planning, implementation, and assessment will be covered in this course. Participants will deepen their understanding of the components of the Creative Curriculum and make connections to theory and research and they will develop specification plans/goals to improve the quality of their environment, planning, and assessment within their setting. Educators will understand how content is integrated into interest areas, create an appropriate environment for all children, and develop lesson plans that include considerations for environmental changes, content, and child skills.

Target Audience: Preschool teachers (including Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program and Early Childhood Special Education teachers), assistant teachers, administrators/directors, community based early childhood staff and Mississippi Bend AEA staff serving preschool programs.

Each registrant will need to bring the following to the training:
• The Creative Curriculum for Preschool (4th or 5th edition). The 2010 5th edition can be purchased by calling 800-637-3652 and selecting option 4 for customer service. (This is a 5 volume set including The Foundation, Interest Areas, Math & Literacy content area books and the Objectives for Development and Learning.) You can also check with Mississippi Bend AEA9 media department to see if you can check out a copy of The Creative Curriculum for Preschool (5th edition). See of you can borrow books from a colleague instead of buying them. We will have a few copies of books that can be loaned during the class.
• A copy of the Objectives for Development and Learning (which can be purchased separately, or found in the Teaching Strategies GOLD Assessment Toolkit or is Volume 5 of the Creative Curriculum for Preschool 5th edition).

          Bullet Implementing GOLD Online Assessment
This course is designed for Early Childhood practitioners to deepen their understanding and implementation of Teaching Strategies GOLD Online Assessment. Participants will receive hands-on instruction and practice opportunities to help them learn to enter observational data efficiently, generate and analyze reports for instructional planning and communicating with parents, invite and involve parents into this online system, and plan for individuals and groups of students based on available data. Ongoing support throughout the class will enable participants to effectively and successfully unitize this assessment system.

          Bullet Infant Toddler Positive Behavior Supports: Promoting Social and Emotional Competence
Positive Behaviorial Interventions and Support (PBIS) is an approach for changing a child´s behavior. It is based on humanistic values and research. It is an approach for developing an understanding of why the child has challenging behavior and teaching the child new skills to replace the challenging behavior. PBS is a holistic approach that considers all of the factors that impact a child, a family, and the child´s behavior. Through emerging research, it has been found that PBS is a very powerful intervention that is effective with all ages, diverse groups, and people of various cultures and abilities. It is the only comprehensive approach that is evidence-based and addresses challenging behaviors within a variety of natural settings. Infant Toddler PBS is designed for caregivers and other professionals working with children birth through 2 years old and their families.

“The Creative Curriculum for Preschool”® is designed for Early Childhood programs serving ages 3-5. It rests on a firm foundation of research and responds to new requirements for addressing academics content. With an environmentally based approach, it clearly defines the role of the teacher in connecting content, teaching and learning for preschool children. The organizational structure of “The Creative Curriculum for Preschool”® will cover: How Children Develop and Learn, The Learning Environment, What Children Learn, The Teacher’s Role, and The Family’s Role.

Every participant is required to bring a copy of “The Creative Curriculum for Preschool”® each class session. Instructors will not be purchasing or providing copies for participants.

          Bullet Iowa Early Learning Standards: Getting to Know the Revised IELS

The Iowa Early Learning Standards (2012) define what young children should know and be able to do during the first five years of life. Getting to Know the Iowa Early Learning Standards (IELS) is a professional development opportunity for any practitioner who touches the lives of children and families. The course includes training modules that include a variety of activities to assist practitioners in building their understanding of the IELS and how to use them in their work with children and families. Module topics include: Introduction to the IELS, Principles of Child Development, Understanding Early Learning Theory, Approaching Learning through Play; The Role of Relationships and Routines in Children´s Development, and A Seamless Continuum of Learning from Birth - 12th Grade.

Target Audience: Practioners in roles within early care and education, family support, health mental health, and special needs settings who serve children and families.

This course is being done in collaboration with Clinton/Jackson Early Childhood Iowa and Scott County Kids. Participants will receive resources and materials to support this implementation. You must attend all sessions to receive those materials.

The series was developed and written by Tammy Bormann, an ECE Consultant and Instructor in Central Iowa, through funds from Early Childhood Iowa and the Iowa Department of Management as part of their efforts to ensure that “Every child, beginning at birth, will be healthy and successful.”

          Bullet Quality Preschool Program Standards (QPPS) Training
The Quality Preschool Program Standards provide guidance regarding the quality of early care and education programs. Research shows that high quality learning experiences prepare children to successfully achieve the social and academic challenges of school age programs. In order to develop these skills, children need opportunities to participate in early learning experiences that produce positive child and family outcomes. The course offers participants a structure and guide to implement and meet Quality Preschool Program Standards.

          Bullet Technology in the Early Childhood Classroom

This class is designed to share practical technology applications that can be used to support cognitive, motor and communication skills development with early childhood students. Participants will learn to use technology to develop or incorporate instructional materials using an iPad/iPhone/iTouch into their classroom and/or direct service practice. Participants will also gain information on the basic uses and simple tips and tricks of the iPad/iPhone/iTouch.

This course will also include other online resources for early childhood providers to use in their daily practice to assist in time saving techniques and enhance their knowledge of resources available to them. Many of our youngest students are using devices in their homes and preschool. As an early childhood service provider, it is important to be current in your resources and ability to use these devices.

Target Audience: Preschool & kindergarten teachers, assistant teachers, administrators/directors, community based early childhood staff and AEA staff serving early childhood programs.

          Bullet District Challenging Behavior Training Project
This course is open only to North Scott CSD or Muscatine CSD staff.

This course will cover the basic principles of behavior, functional behavior assessment tools and effective interventions. Registration is restricted to staff comprising the North Scott Behavior Team and AEA staff that support North Scott. The course will focus on conducting a technically adequate Functional Behavior Assessment and matching behavior interventions to function. Each participant will be responsible for conducting a functional behavior assessment in their respective school with a case study student. Each participant will practice at preparation of procedures, data collection, running procedures, graphing data, data analysis and future assessment /interventions. Finally, each participant will be responsible for sharing their case example via a presentation to the group as a learning opportunity. Site Visits for year 2 will be developed and planned as part of the end of the year learning and May date.

          Bullet Family Guided Routines-Based Interventions 16-17
This course is open only to AEA employees.

Family Guided Routines Based Intervention (FGRBI) is an ongoing research endeavor focused on developing and validating an early intervention approach incorporating IDEA Part C mandates and the recommended evidence-based practices for supports and services for young children with special needs and their families. Caregiver coaching research documents strategies that facilitate the implementation of FGRBI by caregivers with their children in everyday routines and activities. Together, FGRBI and Caregiver Coaching offer strategies for early intervention professionals across disciplines to support development of child and family outcomes.

Currently, the Iowa Department of Education is partnering with Florida State University to provide FGRBI training through a Distance Mentoring Model (DMM). The purpose of these sessions is to introduce basic FGRBI/DMM concepts as well as promote and support implementation of FGRBI/caregiver coaching practices for all Early ACCESS providers in Region 9.
