Moving Ways to Read and Write about Images in West Africa
Audience: Teachers of grades 3-8
In this workshop teachers explore West African culture through its textile art. Using the Kente cloth patterns and Adrinka symbols based on proverbs and attributes for which the cultures strive, teachers will learn to guide students´ exploration of patterns and symbols through creative movement and writing. After the guided explorations, they learn ways to combine movement and writing into a culminating performance piece. This workshop connects to the social studies curriculum in learning about a culture and learning to work cooperatively, to the Language Arts curriculum through writing about one´s interpretations and experiences, and it also connects to national and state standards for dance education.
