Healthy, Physically Fit and Ready for Action: Addressing the Physical Education and Activity Needs of Individuals with Disabilites

Students with disabilities are expected to achieve in their classrooms at the same high academic levels as their nondisabled peers. Yet, often times, health and fitness barriers such as obesity, low energy, plus low self-esteem and social integration issues get in the way of their ability to achieve.

This conference will address these concerns and show how good programs in (adapted) physical education and activity led by highly qualified teachers can make a real difference, not only with the individuals´ health, physical well-being and life¬long fitness, but also in academics.

Connecting Educational Standards to Student Learning Plans

As schools become increasingly accountable for the academic achievement of students with disabilities, instruction based on academic content standards has become a best practice in American classrooms. One method for planning the student’s instructional program is through the development and implementation of standards-based IEP’s.

This conference will walk through the steps involved in developing standards-based IEP’s and discuss both successes these kinds of IEP’s generate and the barriers to their development and implementation from both state and local perspectives.

           Salvation Army Angel Tree

Coursewhere volunteer sign-up for the Angel Tree Campaign is limited to Lenawee ISD Staff members. Thank you!

The Salvation Army´s Angel Tree Program provides new clothing and/or toys for children. The tree is decorated with numbered paper angel tags with age and gender of a child who will receive the gift. Contributors remove one or more tags from the tree and purchase appropriate gifts for the child or children described on the tags. Donated gifts are forwarded to parents to distribute to the children on Christmas Day.

The Adrian Mall Angel Tree will be located at the south side of the Elder-Beerman store. Because the Salvation Army is short on volunteers this year, the Tree may not be manned when the 4:00 p.m. volunteer arrives. If unmanned, detailed instructions for signing-out angels and taking in gifts, tape, scissors, etc. will be available – most likely in a small box pushed against the wall.

For all other volunteers, the person in the time slot previous to yours will explain the procedures for signing out Angels and for receiving incoming gifts. You will need to do the same for the person that follows you. The last volunteer is scheduled from 7:00-8:00 p.m. That person should push any packages/paperwork against the wall before leaving.

Your volunteer experience will most likely be to take in a gift or two and to sign-out a couple angels. . .fairly quiet, with lots of smiles to passers-by.

Everyone says the time goes by more quick - plus, it´s a lot more fun! - when you volunteer with another person, so feel free to bring along a family member or sign-up with a co-worker or friend. If you plan to volunteer with a friend or co-worker, please indicate the name of your partner in the "Special Needs/Comments" box. Thank you!

           Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign
