           Building on the Literacy Foundation (Gr. 3-5) (2009-10)

As students move into the Intermediate Grades, the challenge of comprehending texts across the curriculum becomes more complex.

Come join a community of educators of students in Grades 3 – 5 as we discuss ways to organize for success. We will consider topics such as:

Students’ ability to understand and use words with ease plays a major role in determining their academic success. Building vocabulary muscles, therefore, provides students with added strength as they pursue their school and life careers. Come join us as we share vocabulary exercises.

  • What are the author’s important ideas?
  • What is the major concept?
  • How does this fit with what I already know?
  • What should I think or do with this information?

Oftentimes students will say, “I read it,” but when assessed for comprehension we realize “they didn’t get it!” In this workshop we will explore a procedure for reading and thinking about narrative text.

Each participant will receive a packet of strategies and graphic organizers to assist them in moving their students to higher levels of understanding as they answer questions such as:

  • What did the character do?
  • Why did s(he) act this way?
  • Was it right or wrong for the character to act this way?
  • What did the character get from acting this way?
  • How am I like the character in this story?
  • What lesson can be learned from this story?
  • How has this lesson learned changed the way I think?

           Literacy and Augmentative Communication [A]

"Literacy and Augmentative Communication: Providing a Window for ALL Students to Access Literacy" is designed for Teachers, Speech Language Pathologists, Paraprofessionals, Parents and other Support Staff.

This workshop will explore key literacy principles and how they relate to providing a balanced approach to literacy instruction for students who use Augmentative Communication and/or are emergent readers and writers.

Participants will learn how to integrate the four critical components of a balanced literacy curriculum as they are embedded across examples of classroom learning activities.

A continuum of communication devices, interactive software (IntelliTools Classroom Suite) and adapted book materials will be shared. Numerous examples will be provided on how to adapt materials that can be easily integrated with reading and writing activities to provide meaningful access to literacy for all students, regardless of their entry-level skills. An Activity CD will be provided.

           Middle School/High School Lenawee Literacy Learning Team meetings (2009-10) [A]

Please note: Participants for this workshop are pre-identified educators from Lenawee County local districts.

In order to continue the expansion of the Response to Literacy Initiative into middle schools and high schools during 2009–2010, representatives from each middle and high school are invited to attend two networking meetings.

The goals of these Middle School/High School Literacy Learning Network Days for 2009 – 2010 are to:

  • Continue to strengthen the Middle School/High School Literacy Learning Network
  • Discuss how the Response to Intervention and Literacy Initiatives can better assist local buildings in enhancing learning for all students
  • Provide updates on county, state, and national initiatives

           START Intensive Training Series (2009-10)

Please note: Registration for this training series is by invitation only to pre-identified LISD and local district staff from Lenawee, Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale and Jackson Counties. Please contact your supervisor for more information.

This six-day training series is designed to provide participants with in-depth knowledge and strategies regarding working with individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Multi-disciplinary teams are selected to focus upon a particular student with ASD. The team will participate in module trainings which support the philosophies of the Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START). The mission of the intensive training is to give professionals and parents the knowledge and skills to support individuals with autism spectrum disorder in reaching their greatest potential.

Four training modules will be taught in the six days:

  • Module 1: Building Foundations: Understanding Autism and the Universal Supports
  • Module 2: Educational Strategies
  • Module 3: Peer-to-Peer Supports
  • Module 4: Behavior Supports for Students with ASD

NOTE: You only have to register once to register for all 6 days of the series.

           VAEL - M.A.E.A. Conference Recap (December 3, 2009) [A]
VAEL´s "Conference Recap" has been one of the most popular and productive sessions year after year.

Back by popular request, Linda Hooker will facilitate the annual MAEA Conference Recap. She will be joined in the afternoon by Annie Howard who will lead a discussion on “Sub Plans: Classroom Management and Organization.”

For the afternoon session, it will be helpful to bring ideas for management, organization and sub plans. We can share an awesome collection of these items. Please bring copies so ideas can be easily shared.
