His books are valued by teachers because the writings combine pragmatic strategies for quality instruction and the big picture of what we want our students to become.       RTI Academy
The RTI Academy will frame the Texas Adolescent Literacy Academy 7th/8th grade (TALA) training. During the Monday session, the focus will be on Tier One interventions and will cover gathering data from multiple sources, evaluating that data, a profile of the struggling reader (including the tactics he uses to escape detection), providing scaffolds on core instruction, and test taking strategies that foster thinking. Friday´s focus will be Tier Two and Tier Three interventions with strategies and activities to target specific reading deficiencies and program monitoring, as well as a training protocol for equipping volunteer reading tutors. Participants will come away with specific information and tools to serve campus needs. Think of it as a crash course in becoming a reading specialist or literacy coach. Teachers who attended the 6th grade TALA academy last year or the 7th/8th grade TALA in June do not need to attend the T-TH TALA. If registering for TALA sign up in Region 11.

The 20 Best Books for Engaging Relunctant Readers
Amazing Opportunity! On Tuesday, June 3rd, LISD is bringing Teri Lesesne, author of Naked Reading and Making the Match, aka the Goddess of Young Adult Literature, to speak to middle school teachers on the topic, "The 20 Best Books for Engaging Reluctant Readers." Teri´s presentations are always highly entertaining and informative because no one knows more about classic, current and yes, future titles, to connect with all students. Jason´s Deli will cater the event, and we´re asking teachers to pay for their own dinner because--and here is the best part of all--the first 50 teachers who sign up on CourseWhere and who are in attendance that night will receive a copy of those 20 titles, including a copy of Lesesne´s Naked Reading--FREE!. These books will be tremendous resources as you work with your struggling readers next year and can play a vital role in matching high-interest tutoring materials with students who did not meet standard on TAKS or test below grade level. Time spent reading is what builds readers, and finding that magic, silver-bullet book is often what´s missing in our efforts to help struggling readers.
