      3D Solid Modeling Software - Intro to Pro/E Wildfire 4.0
This workshop is for all teachers in grades 7 - 12

The purpose of this workshop is to educate a wide variety of certified teachers to the many possibilities of using the 3D Solid Modeling Software Pro/E Wildfire 4.0 in their classrooms. This software has capabilities that span modeling, assemblies, drawings, animations, kinematic analysis and dynamic analysis, design optimization, renderings, and more-all fully associative and integrated. It is a great way to introduce ALL students to 3D design and technology. A free Student Edition enables students to work on their classroom projects on their own personal computers. Teachers completing this workshop will be certified for up to 300 free seats of this software for their schools, a possible $900,000 value.

      Asthma in Children and Youth: What Schools and Other Professionals Need to Know [A]
This workshop is educators, social workers, nurses, parents.

This workshop will give an overview of asthma, it´s symtoms, trigger factors, and control measures needed in and out of the classroom. Objectives: Provide a review and up-to-date on School Asthma Basics to better manage asthma in thte classroom. Introduce components of SAI-School Asthma initiative through interactive demonstrations approporiate for k-12 students. Provide an overview of asthma management, allergens and pets, and testing and diagnosis.

      Behavior Strategies for kids with Autism, Emotional Disturbances and Learning Disabilities [A]
This workshop is for regular education teachers, special education teachers, paraprofessionals/support staff, district administrators

This workshop will provide specific behavior strategies and interventions to use with children with autism, emotional disturbances and learning disabilities in a variety of settings. It will examine Positive Behavior Support Plans and interventions. The morning session will consist of demonstration of a variety of strategies. The afternoon session will consist of time for networking among peers and time to create behavior interventions and collection tools as needed for individual classrooms.

      Bioinformatics in Genetics
This workshop is for teachers in grades 9 - 12.

This workshop is a Biological Sciences Curriculum Study(BSCS) supplement for high school biology classes to help understand how and why computers are essential for analyzing the data produced by the Human Genome Project. You will be introduced to some of the most common bioinformatics methods for improved understanding of our genetic diversity, along with raising some issues associated with establishing and using genetic databases. An electronic and printed copy of the Bioinformatics workbook will be provided.

      City Theatre Young Playwrights
Teachers will receive classroom support for introducing the art and crafts of playwriting when City Theatre places qualified teaching artists in their classrooms for up to 15 hours of residnecy to teach playwriting, analyze scenes from plays and conduct one-on-one writing conferences with students.
      Classroom 2.0 Mega Conference
Join us at the IU 1 on Friday, September 19th or Saturday, September 20th as we collaborate with IU´s across Pennsylvania for the state´s first Classroom 2.0 Workshop! Classroom 2.0 LIVE Workshops are "collaborative" and highly-engaging events that focus on the practical use of Web 2.0 technologies in education.

The hands-on workshops have been organized by local educators, and have a unique format of demonstrations, facilitated discussions, and "drill-down" time. The goal is to replicate the participative nature of the Web in a physical setting. We promise you will have a lot of fun as you teach and learn.

The workshops are designed to be highly practical, and beginners are especially invited and encouraged to attend, in fact, you are the reason we are holding these workshops!

      Co-Teaching with Marilyn Friend
Marilyn Friend, Ph.D., has spent her career as a general education teacher, special education teacher, teacher educator, and staff developer. She is currently Professor of Education in the Department of Specialized Education Services at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she teaches coursework on inclusive practices and collaboration among service providers. She also currently is serving on the Board of the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children. She has consulted with school professionals nationally and internationally (more than 1000 presentations and projects in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia) as they collaborate to educate their students, assisting them to form productive and efficient work teams, to learn the best ways to manage awkward or adversarial conversations, and to communicate effectively with parents.

Her particular areas of interest include skills for collaboration, co-teaching, inclusive school practices, team building, shared problem solving, interpersonal communication, conflict and controversy, and home-school communication. She is the author of Special Education: Contemporary Perspectives for School Professionals (2005), Interactions: Collaboration Skills for School Professionals (5th edition, 2007 with Summer 2006 release date) (with Dr. Lynne Cook), Including Students with Special Needs: A Practical Guide for Classroom Teachers (4 th edition, 2006) (with Dr. William Bursuck), and Co-Teach! A Manual for Creating and Sustaining Classroom Partnerships (in press with Spring 2006 release date). In addition, she is the co-producer on a series of videotapes about collaboration, co-teaching, and inclusion, including The Power of Two (2 nd edition, 2005), and the author of more than 45 articles on collaboration, inclusive practices, and related topics.

      Community Action Southwest Managing your Classroom
This workshop is for Community Action Southwest Head Start Staff.

This training will assist teachers in developing a system for the appropriate supervision of children in the classroom and on the playground, understanding and guiding a child´s behavior, and observational methods.

      Developmentally Appropriate Practices and Screening Tools for Early Intervention
This training is open to Community Action Southwest Head Start staff only.

This session in for Community Action Southwest Head Start staff only . The session will address the Brigance Developmental Assessment, positive behavioral supports and autism awareness and classroom strategies. Paticipants will identify the key components of autism spectrum disorders & analyze the range of syndromes included within this category. Participants will define and describe interventions that are (a) ethical, (b) replicable, and (c) related to research and evidence based practices. Participants will evaluate appropriate practices and develop goals to be used in educational planning.

      Domestic Violence/Transitioning and Developmental Delays
This workshop is for Community Action Southwest Head Start Staff.

Four topic areas will be addressed at this training. (1) The rise in Domestic Violence and how to handle families involved in Domestic Violence and the effects it has on children in the home. (2) Transitioning of children into the public schools or into Head Start classrooms.(3) Dental/Medical issues in the home. The importance of good health in order to create a good learning environment.(4) How to recognize developmental delays in children ages 0-5 years of age.

      DynaVox M3 Training
This workshop is for professionals of students using DynVox M3 devices.

At this workshop we will learn about DynaVox Systems´ philosophy and how to access services; learn about product hardware features, including ports, indicators and batteries; learn about DynaVox Setup menu; adjust controls to suit the needs of the communicator; explore button types and button fields; modify existing communication page; and build communication pages and pop ups. Advance training on the M3 will offer learning to manipulate objects on a communication page using Tools and Modify menus and learn to use digital images to create interactive communication pages.

      EI SMART Board Training [A]
This workshop is designed to begin curriculum planning for EI teachers to use in conjunction with SMART boards and SMART tables. In addition, EI staff members will become acquainted with the SMART technology that will be used in all EI classrooms.
      Entrepreneurship and Education - How to Write a Successful Business Plan [A]
This workshop is for Teachers/Supervisors of Business Ed, Gifted & Talented or any interested

This session presents a 20-lesson high school curriculum which Business Education, Gifted & Talented Teachers can use to supplement their own curriculum in the process of "Writing a Successful Business Plan". The Program explores entrepreneurship and integrates economic concepts aligned with PA Standards. Hands-on practice in researching and writing a business plan help develop student skills in understanding the economy and the role of entrepreneurship in our society. Lessons here also prepare students for competition in the EconomicsPA Business Plan Competition. Great prizes are offered in both regional and state-wide competitions.

      Extending the STEM Experience, Science Summer Camps for Students
Since the advent of PSSA testing, it has been shown that 10% less time is spent on instruction in science and mathematics! By offering a teacher friendly, parent pleasing science summer camp for students, a school can increase student motivation and improve student attitudes toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) content while giving students the opportunity to increase their skills and knowledge in the Nature of Science, the PSSA science reporting category with greatest number of points.

The workshop will focus on two camp programs: nationally recognized Camp Invention which can be run at any school, and Camp Tech developed and run by the IU 1 Center for STEM Education.

Teachers will engage in hands on problem solving camp activities, and receive a packet of contact information with easy and interesting standards-based classroom activities.

The workshop in part is funded by the IU 1 Center for STEM Education through a Benedum Grant. A light lunch will be provided.

      Family Fitness
This workshop is for Elementary teachers in Grades 3-5, Health & Physical Education teachers, School Wellness Committees, School Nurses, After-school Program Provider

The Family Fitness program is an in or after school program for all children ages 8-12, especially for those who are at risk for becoming overweight or who are overweight. Family fitness is based on Stages of Change Learning Theory and motivational interviewing techniques and provides parents, adult caregivers and children the information, skills, and motivational guidance necessary to achieve diet quality and a healthy level of physical activity. The research-based program teaches families how to achieve a healthier lifestyle. (2008 Society of Nutriton Education Public Health Division´s Program Award)

      Family Fitness and Zoom! After School Program
This workshop is for educators, social workers, nurses, parents.

Research has demonstrated a need to provide family -based prevention programs to help decrease the escalating epidemic of childhood overweight. The workshop will discuss the vital role educators play in working with families of elementary-aged children with diet quality and physical activity levels.

At the conclusion of the workshop the participants will be able to:

      Family Voice and Chioce
This workshop is for Families, Youth, and Service Provders.

The Objective of this Workshop are to engage families, youth and providers in a discussion related to the role of families in choosing mental health services and activities in accordance with the needs of their identified child/youth. There will be an emphasis on utilizing natural community supports and resources.

      Froebel´s Kindergarten and the Mathematics of Wright´s Designs

      Functional Behavior Assessment [A]
This workshop is for Special Educators, Regular Educators, District Administration, Building Principals, Guidance Counselors, 1:1/Paraprofessionals.

This workshop will provide the fundaments on Functional Behavior Assessments including; the point of, how to conduct an FBA, short vs. long, interventions to use while conducting and FBA.

      Google, Google Everywhere – Google Tools for the Classroom [A]
This workshop is for any K-12 educator.

This workshop will explore several Google resources and tools that will increase student engagement and enhance instruction in all content areas. The session will also include a discussion of how the content should determine the tool used. Participants should bring to the workshop at least 2 lessons which they would like to enhance and increase the level of rigor (using the new Bloom´s Taxonomy).

      Health and Movement in the Classroom Home Environment
This workshop is for Community Action Southwest Head Start Staff.

This training will address the use of I am Moving, I am Learning in the classroom and extending it into the home environment to promote health, movement, learning and behaviors. In addition, a nutritionist will be presenting on diabetes and how to recognize/prevent it; how to talk/teach to parents and children.

      Heartsaver CPR Course, First Aid and AED Training [A]
This workshop is for Intermediate Unit 1 Professional Staff and School District Staff who are interested in being trained in CPR/First Aid and AED application.

To train staff in CPR, First Aid and AED principles and application. Persons completeing this training will be certified in CPR, First Aid and AED.

      Innovations in Pediatric Development
This workshop is for Teachers of Elementary or Middle Schools, School Nurses, Social Workers, Guidance Councelors, Coaches, Family and Consumers.

Dr. Jennifer K. Ripepi, a board certified pediatric physician will present a spectrum of pediatric development including an outline of the signs, symptoms and resources available to those in need. She will discuss children with behavioral and physical challenges with a special focus on the developmentally delayed.

Also presenting will be Nancy McCauley MS, CCC, SLP, Rehabilitation Supervisor and a certified Speech, Language Pathologist who will discuss the Center for Childhood Development programs available at Monongahela Valley Hospital.

      Innovations in the Novel H1N1 Flu Treatment
This workshop is for anyone who comes into contact with schoolage children.

Jeffrey R. James, M.D. and board certified in Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine along with a team of healthcare professionals will present a program designed to recognize the risk factors associated with the Novel H1N1 Influenza. He will discuss how to recognize the flu, its signs and symptoms, as well as prevention tactics such as minimizing exposure of those ill and the new immuniztion available and who should receive it.

      Intermediate/Advanced Promethean Interactive Board Training and Integration
This workshop is for all educators in all grades.

Take your Promethean skills a step further. This workshop will enhance participant´s introductory knowledge of the Promethean Board. Educators will share lessons, flipcharts, and resources. Information on integrating the Promethean Board into the classroom curriculum will be provided. Time is allotted for planning and collaboration.

All attendees must complete the FREE online "Level 1 Foundation Skills Course for Activstudio" offered by Promethean. This course can be found at

Upon completion, attendees will receive a certificate of completion that can be submitted at sign-in on April 15th.

Videoconference with Judith K. Graves, Digital Projects Coordinator for the Library of Congress for a Library of Congress ONLINE session. This workshop will have a Language Arts emphasis, but any educator may attend.

There will be time allowed to develop lessons and for individual exploration of the extensive Library of Congress website.

      Introduction to PDE/BCTE Math Council Resources
This workshop is for CTC teachers, including technical, support, and academic staff.

CTC, academic, and support teachers are invited to participate in an Introduction to the PDE/BCTE Math Council Resources Workshop. Participants in this session will work collaboratively with peers, both in job-aligned groups and in school teams, to access the math integration Resources provided by PDE and BCTE and discuss implementation strategies. Teachers will establish communities of practice and use current technology to share best practices.

This workshop will enable participants to successfully implement the PDE/BCTE Math Council Resources created specifically for Programs of Study in Career and Technology Centers.

Academic and support teachers from sending schools are encouraged to attend as well.

      Investigations Overview and Lesson Demonstration
This workshop is for Elementary Administrators and Elementary Teachers

The participants will learn the fundamentals ideas of the big ideas in math as presented in the Investigations math curriculum. The participants will learn how to best navigate through the Investigations teacher resource materials. The particpants will take on the role of the student during a model lesson demonstration.

      KITS Integrating Videoconferencing into the Curriculum for KITS Schools [A]
This workshop is for RWAN (KITS) team members.

These sessions will provide professional development in the area of technology integration (with an emphasis on the use of video conferencing to introduce and support PA State Standard´s based content) and collaboration for grades K-12. The activites may also include relevant , content specific Internet searching, the discussion and use of interactive whiteboards, classroom response systems, webquests,virtual fieldtrips, GPS units and Web 2.0 tools and how thay can be used to effectively teach core content subjects.

      LAMP - An AAC Strategy for Promoting the Development of Communication for Individuals with ASD
This workshop is for Regular/Special Educators, Speech/Language Clinicians, Paraprofessionals, Parents, and Agency Personnel

An overview of the LAMP training and how it promotes language development will be addressed in the morning session. The afternoon session will be devoted to utilizing the Vantage Lite (a Prentke Romich Co. Speech Generating Device) to incorporate the LAMP principles into classroom academic and therapy objectives.

      LEA Training Session - Indicator 13 and Homeless Intiative Training
In response to the accountability requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA), Part B State Performance Plan, the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) and Intermediate Unit (IU) Transition Consultants will be providing local education agencies (LEAs) and approved private schools (APSs) targeted, sustained training and technical assistance in developing and implementing effective secondary transition plans that include coordinated, measurable, annual IEP goals that will reasonably enable students to meet post-secondary outcomes (Indicator 13).

This training will also focus on new information that has been provided concerning the Homeless Initiative in addition to training on updated regulation informaiton.

      LEA Training Session - Overview of Adult Ed, Non-pub, ESL, SWIS, Updates
This training will focus on Equitable Partipciation for Parentally Placed Private School Children and an overview of services for Adult Education, Non-public and ESL. The training will also focus on Surrogate Parent Information, Updates on Non-resident students in institutions and School Wide Positivie Behavior Support.
      Lessons from our Nation’s Scrapbook – Using the Free Digital Resources of our National Archives [A]
This workshop is for all educators in grades K-12.

This activity will provide professional development in the area of technology integration by exploring the free digital resources of the US National Archives website to support PA State Standard´s based content for grades K-12. David Roesenbaum, Educational Specialist with the National Archives, will also be instructing the session via videoconference. Participants are to bring at least 1 lesson to the workshop to redesign and elevate the level of rigor (New Bloom´s Taxonomy) by using materials from the Archives.

      Let´s Discover the New Discovery Streaming
This workshop is for any K-12 educator.

This workshop will explore the new Discovery Streaming website which now includes Discovery School´s materials. The session will include the review and discussion of the site´s features including images, video clips, songs, the Builders, interactive Atlas, and other educational resources which support PA Standard based lessons. This activity may also feature the current research which supports the use of video clips and other multimedia in helping students master content and improve test scores.

      LETRS Cohort 1 Grades 4-12 Modules 2, 3, and 12
This workshop is by invitation only to those who attended the LETRS training for Modules 1, 4 and 11.

Module 2: In module 2, participants will learn the relationship between phoneme awareness, phonoloical processing, and phonics; define, identify and segment important linguisti units including vowels, consonants, syllables, and onset-rime; practice with a model the pronunciation of vowel and consonant phonemes; will become accurate with matching, producing, counting, blending, segmenting and manipulating phonemes in one-syllable words; recognize phonological influences on children´s inventive spelling; and will recognize that most dialect differences are rulebased.

Module 3: In module 3, participants will identify grapheme units including consonant digraphs, silent letter consonant combinations, combinations with marker e, vowel teams, and vowel-r combinations; explore the most common consonant correspondences and versatile uses of some letters; sort words to find spelling patterns that are determined by the sequence and position of sounds in a work; locate the major spellings for each vowel sound on the vowel spelling chart; differentiate between the concepts of "high frequency" and ´irregular´words; recognize and classify six syllable types and combine those syllables to make words; apply the three major rules for adding endings: "y" rule the silent e rule, and the doubling rule; recognize the difference between a syllable and a morpheme; find syllable and morpheme divisions in words; classify words according to their Anglo-Saxon, Latin, or Greek origin; understand the connection between etyomology, spelling patterns, and word meanings.

Module 12: "...reviews the rationale and procedures of brief language, reading, spelling, and writing assessments that will inform classroom and remedial instruction. This module, grounded in research, will emphasize the importance of efficient, reliable, and valid assessments about reading problems that will help pinpoint the needs of at-risk students. This workshop is by invitation only to those who attended the LETRS training for Modules 1, 2, and 3.

Module 4: Teachers will engage in questions, problems, and tasks that lead to understanding of:

  • Understanding the many facets of word meaning
  • Appreciate the role of vocabulary knowledge in reading comprehension
  • Identify the ways in which word meanings are learned, in oral and written language
  • Experiment with the role of context in word learning
  • Develop a rationale for choosing specific words for direct instruction
  • Generate multiple meanings for words and understand why instruction of multiple meanings and multiple uses is important
  • Practice semantic feature analysis to apprecdiate how words are related in meaning
  • Practice categorizing and understand its importance
  • Sketch a lesson plan for teaching vocabulary in or related to a specific text

      Manufacturing and the New Energy Economy
This workshop is for Counselors, technology teachers, science teachers, school administrators, career counselors

Imagine a world without lights, without television and radio, without industry, without cars and trucks – without energy. Without energy our society would come to a halt. It has been taken for granted for decades that energy is plentiful and cheap, but that situation is changing. Southwestern Pennsylvania has the potential to be a major center of the energy industry moving forward, but only if it has the workforce to carry it there. Participants in this workshop will be able to identify the broad spectrum of career opportunities in the energy industry, including bio-fuels and solar power and the skills needed in the workforce of the future.

      My Career Journey Curriculum Design
Participants of this workshop should include representatives from the curriculum staff in the school districts, persons knowledgeable about Middle School curriculum and the PA Career and Work Standards, General, Special Education teachers, supervisors and related service providers.

My Career Journey is the new Middle School web based program developed by Smart Futures to assist school districts in meeting the requirements of the PA Career and Work Standards as well as Transition as mandated in IDEA.

IU 1 has received a grant from the Benedum Foundation to work with the schools in developing a curriculum for this middle school program. A work group is being created to include all persons interested in assisting.

      NEFE High School Financial Planning Program
This workshop is for Teachers, Vo Tech staff, and others desiring to improve the financial literacy of high school students.

The NEFE HFSPP was designed and developed around a special type of education called performance-based learning. With performance-based learning, students take what they learn and apply it directly in the course of each unit. Carefully designed exercises and activities move the student step-by-step toward each of the seven core competencies that the program teaches.

    In the process, students:

There is growing interest in possible dietary involvement in the etiology and treatment of Autistic Spectrum disorders, ADD, and ADHD. A review of the research that has focused on the physiological and behavioral effects of dietary change is important to understand alternative treatments.

Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of gluten and/or casein freee diets on the symptoms of individulas Autistic spectrum disorder.
To develop an understanding of the Oligoantigenic diet.
To review research on nutrition supplements for ADD/ADHD symtoms. Understanding why children do not learn from traditional bejavioral strategies by exploring research findings.       PA eMentoring [A]
Individuals interested in refreshing their skills, learning new updates, or getting started with PA e-Mentoring are encouraged to participate. High school general and special educators, curriculum coordinators, principals, special education supervisors, transition coordinators & counselors.

This session will prepare participants to intergrate PA e-Mentoring with high schools. PA e-Mentoring is an online career program that connects working adults with high school students via e-mail and structured online activities - to explore careers and career pathways. Mentee and mentor complete 10 career related activities that promote career education and self-awareness. Mentors are required to complete the PA Child Abuse Crimminal Record Clearances.

PA-LETRS Module 3 explores the structure and history of English spelling from several angles: phoneme-grapheme correspondences, letter patterns within words, syllables, meaningful word parts (morphemes), and historical layers in the orthography. The module addresses differences between syllables and morphemes, between "irregular" and "high frequency" words, and among six syllable types. After learning this content, teachers can approach phonics, spelling and word study with confidence.

This intense two-day training is designed to teach participants to appropriately implement the Picture Exchange Communication System. It begins with an overview of the Pyramid Approach to Education to explore the key components of designing effective educational environments. A historical overview of language training programs used with non-verbal individuals is discussed along with how to set the stage for an abundance of communication opportunities. Participants will learn how to implement the six Phases of PECS, including attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with a fundamental understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.” Registration is 8-8:30, with a prompt start time of 8:30.       Pennsylvania Child Abuse Summit

What is a Poverty Simulation?
The power of this unique learning resource is that it creates insight into the state of chronic crisis that consumes so many working families. The poverty simulation experience provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget.

The experience is divided into four 15-minute sessions, each of which represents one week in which you must provide for your family and maintain your home.

      Prevention and Treatment of Methicillin Resistent Staphylococcus Aureus
This workshop is for Athletic Directors, Coaches, School Nurses, Family and Consumer teachers and Environment and Ecology teachers.

Dr. Jeffrey James, a board certified infection control specialist, will discuss the identification, prevention and treatment of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). The Participants will understand how to identify MRSA on the skin or wound and how the infection is spread in the community and school environments. The participants will understand how the overuse of antibiotics is one of the primary causes for the current outbreak of MRSA in the school environment as well as the community environment.

      SDFSC eGrant Preparation
The Pennsylvania Department of Education will be conducting a series of web-based technical assistance training sessions for school personnel and others on the process for completing the 2008-2009 Safe and Drug Free Schools eGrant (Title IV, Part A) application. IU 1 is hosting one of those sessions.
      Self Harming Behavior Among Youth
This workshop is for educators, social workers, nurses, and parents.

This interactive workshop will review the underlying and potential causes of self-injury among young people. The differences between self-injury and suicidality will be addressed. Various treatment approaches that address self-injury will be highlighted. The workshop will also include a discussion of the school´s response in identifying and managing self-injurious behavior among youth. Finally, participants will have an opportunity to practice some strategies designed to minimize vulnerable emotions.

At the conclusion of this presentation participants will be able to:

  • Identify the reasons and means youth engage in self-harming behavior
  • Distinguish between deliberate self-harm and suicidality.
  • Outline a response for schools to manage self-injurious youth.

      Strategies to Engage Girls in STEM
This workshop is for K-12 Science, Technology, Math and Engineering Educators, especially grades 3-8.

Who would not wish to maximize the potential of a child? Yet in our schools, the natural curiosity and investigative tendencies of students, especially girls, is often diminished by the time the students reach high school. This workshop is designed to help educations support girls in our elementary and middle school practices with the goal of guiding them toward STEM courses and careers.

The workshop will include classroom strategies, inquiry based activites to engage girls in STEM areas, classroom materials and information about resources and programs available in SW Pennsylvania.

This workshop is for Kindergarten Teachers and Childcare Providers
Effective Classroom management and Dina Dionsaur Child Social Skills and Problem-Solving Training in the Classroom. In a world of information overload, it is vital for students to not only find information but also determine its validity and appropriateness. These vital skills are needed as students prepare for our global economy. This workshop will explore the techniques educators need to master to search the Internet efficiently and how to teach these techniques to their students. Various search engines and their traits will also be explored and how to determine website ownership, validity, etc. will be discussed.

      They’re Free, Let’s Use Them - Internet Resources and Web 2.0 Tools [A]
This workshop is for any K-12 educator.

This workshop will explore several Internet resources and Web 2.0 tools that will increase student engagement and enhance instruction in all content areas. The session will also include a discussion of how the content should determine the tool used. Participants should bring to the workshop at least 2 lessons which they would like to enhance and increase the level of rigor (using the new Bloom´s Taxonomy).

      Thinkfinity the Gateway to Thousands of Free Internet Resources, Lesson Plans, and Activities [A]
This workshop is for any K-12 educator.

These sessions will provide professional development in the area of technology integration using the resources on the Thinkfinity website. Thinkfinity is the cornerstone of Verizon Foundation’s Literacy, Education and Technology initiatives. This free, comprehensive digital learning platform is built upon the merger of two highly acclaimed programs well-known to educators—the program known as Verizon MarcoPolo and the Verizon Literacy Network. Thinkfinity, which means “endless possibilities for learning,”is designed to improve learning in traditional settings and beyond the classroom by providing high-caliber content and the professional development needed to improve student achievement – anytime, anywhere, at no cost . The session will also explore how this site can be used to effectively teach core content subjects aligned to the PA State Standards.

      We’re Always Beginners – Investigating Internet Professional Learning Network Resources [A]
This workshop is for any K-12 educator.

Come let´s discuss and initiate learning for life! If you´re new to this world, personal learning networks are created by an individual learner, specific to the learner’s needs extending relevant learning connections to like-interested people around the globe. PLNs provide individuals with learning and access to leaders and experts around the world bringing together communities, resources and information impossible to access solely from within school walls. This session will explore some of the opportunities and free Internet resouces that aid in the creation of a PLN.

      Web Site Investigator - An Introduction to Information Forensics
In this session educators will learn the tips and techniques of website evaluation and investigation. Classroom resourses will also be explored.
      Wilson Language Level 1 Training
Registration is by invitation only.

Wilson Reading System is used with students in grades 2-12 and adults who have been unable to learn encoding and decoding through traditional baal method, whole language, or other phonics programs or who require multisesory language instruction to master the ponological coding system of the English language.

The Level 1 Certification is designed to prepare teachers to effectively implement the Wilson Reading System with a student in need of intensive instruction.

This program is generally completed over the course of one school year and consists of: -Word Studey (WRS Steps 1-6) Online Course -Practium with Observations -Start-Up Seminar and Implementation Meetings (for school districts and organizations).
