In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn the basics of secondary math (basics of pre-algebra) and its application to daily life. They will use hands on experience and learn the skills to evaluate, apply and synthesize the information.

This online workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

This online workshop will focus on strategies and supports for autistic students that paraprofessionals can use in order to facilitate mastery of both academic and social communication goals. These strategies and supports can benefit students in both special education and general education settings. Account information and workshop access will be emailed to you the night before the scheduled start date of the workshop. The workshop will be available at 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled start date.

           Aides Blended Schools for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn to navigate the Blended Schools website using technology as the forum. Participants will discuss how to share and post assignments.

           Aides Differentiated Instruction for Extra Contracted Days Online
This online workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by the IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

The workshop will focus on how to meet the needs of individual students in a mixed ability classroom. Participants will also learn about accommodations, adaptations and modifications to maximize the learning potential of students.

           Aides Dramatic Connections for the Classroom
This registration is only for IU 1 Aides who need Extra Contracted Days. The following is the course description.

The course is for IU 1 Aides needing Extra Contracted Days and all K-12 educators including teachers, nurses, substitutes and counselors and meets the following professional development criteria: Teaching skills and reading.

The first session will be held at Little Lake Theater in Canonsburg, PA and includes a performance of the current outreach program from Little Lake, My Lunch Table.

For the first session only, participants will have a box lunch. <>Participants in the course will review pre performance materials, experience the performance, and design connections to their classrooms based on the performance and the materials. Other components of the course include aligning the performance and materials with the PA Academic Standards.

Sunny Disney Fitchett, the Artistic Director for Little Lake Theatre Company, will lead participants in the development of a character study.

The second day of class will be held at Intermediate Unit 1. During the second class participants will share their character studies, brainstorm new outreach program topics, explore additional ways to integrate the arts with academics and raise student achievement, and identify and develop classroom lessons integrating the arts.

Participants will complete pre and post tests, develop a character study, develop an action plan for implementation of the arts into their classrooms, and design a lesson aligned with the PA standards that integrates the arts.

           Aides Effective Instructional Strategies for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn effective strategies to support learning of a variety of learning disabled students. This session will be based on Humanistic approach to self-propelled teaching and learning.

           Aides Excel Powerpoint and Word for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is only for paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need Extra Contracted Days. This workshop is designed to teach the basics of Excel, Powerpoint and Word. The participants will make and share a presentation which can be used in their classrooms.
           Aides Internet and Email for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is only for paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days. Participants will learn how to use the Internet and email. The participants will create an email for themselves.
           Aides Internet Research and Inspiration for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for only for paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

This workshop will focus on the use of the internet to look at the iinformation at your fingertips and the use of Inspiration software. The Inspiration software is a graphic organizer program for making visuals in a short time.

           Aides Make-It/Take-It Classroom Material for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will have the opportunity to create a varietey of materials to use with students in their classrooms. Knowledgeable staff will be available to help assemble game boards, schedules, task organizers, books, response cards and cubes. Limited materials will be provided.

           Aides Math Basics for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn the basics of math and its application to daily life. This will be equivalent to elementary entry math. It will help paras in becoming skilled in application, evaluation and synthesis of math for daily life.

           Aides Motivation and Learning Part I for Extra Contracted Days Online
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn about how motivation affects learning and strategies to motivate students and themselves.

           Aides Motivation and Learning Part II for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn about how motivation affects learning and strategies to motivate students and themselves.

Advanced motivation workshop will focus on the motivation breakthrough and current brain research. The learners will create practical, classroom related strategies based on the human approach to teaching and learning.

           Aides Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Initial Training for Extra Contracted Days
This training is for IU 1 Paraprofessionals who need extra contracted days and have not had NCI training. This is the initial training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention as per the IU1 Behavior Management Policy.

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training focuses on verbal and nonverbal strategies to prevent acting out behaviors and verbal techniques to deescalate problem behavior. Principles of personal safety, team intervention, physical control and restraint techniques (as a last resort), and the coping strategies are also components of the training.

This training counts as one extra contracted day.

           Aides On the Loose With Seuss in the Classroom
This registration is for IU 1 Aides who need extra contracted days.

This course will increase the participants’ knowledge of Dr. Seuss and his works as they relate to topics, themes, and big ideas in their content areas. The participants will use this acquired knowledge by implementing it in their classrooms in areas of content relative to their curriculum.

Objectives:
1. The participants will compare and discuss the writing style of Dr. Seuss relative to the following Reading standards:
1.1 Learning to Read Independently
1.2 Reading Critically in all Content Areas
1.3 Reading, Analyzing, and Interpreting Literature

2. The participants will implement his books into classroom curriculum in a variety of subject areas including character education.

3. The participants will explain Seuss’s writing style and purpose for writing.

4. The participants will create a unit of differentiated lessons relative to their needs using at least five Seuss books.

Participants will complete a written project, performance assessment, and an action plan for implementation. Participants will be assessed using a multiple choice pre and post assessment. Scores on the post assessment must be at least 80%. In addition a lesson plan or project with action plan is required.

           Aides Positive Behavior for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn how to foster and support positive behavior of students in the classroom. This is focused to prevent discipline problems before they seed into the student mind and direct their positive energy for learning.

           Aides PowerPoint for Extra Contracted Days
In this session paraprofessionals will learn the basics of PowerPoint. It is only for those paraprofessionals who need extra contracted days.
           Aides Sign Language for Extra Contracted Days
This session is only for paraprofessions employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop, paraprofessionals will learn common everyday signs (sign language) used in the classroom.

           Aides Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art Curriculum Training
Are you looking for an effective way to integrate art and cultural learning opportunities into your classroom across the content areas? Then this is the course for you. This course is designed for K-12 educators of all content areas who are looking for new and inventive ways to bring art and cultural learning opportunities into their classroom through multiple content areas.

Educators will learn how to use the computer to search the online educational resources created by the Smithsonian Institution and National Gallery of Art, discuss current trends and research on field trips as experiential learning opportunities, and create and translate curriculum guides directly related to the State and National Standards for Education.

This course addresses professional development criteria, teaching skills and reading.

*Required out of class work
Participants will develop curriculum materials from National Gallery of Art resource packs. The curriculum must include 4 lesson plans and integrate at least two content areas (for example social studies and mathematics). There are also two journal articles which are required reading for successful completion of the course. The participants will be assessed using a pre and post test and by the completion of the required assignments.

           Aides Technology for Extra Contracted Days Online
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

This workshop will focus on the basics of Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs. They will create a project and share it on the discussion board in Blended Schools.

           Aides Tools You Have: Accessibility Issues with Computers for Extra Contracted Days
In this session, we will look at accessibility features built in to the computer and software you have in your classroom. Come and learn about the features already in your computer which will allow your students to use it more easily! You will leave with new ideas for helping students who struggle with writing and keyboarding. You will be working in pairs or small groups on PCs.
           Aides Working With the Physically Challenged Child for Extra Contracted Days
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals employed by IU 1 who need extra contracted days.

In this workshop paraprofessionals will learn about the different kinds of physical challenges and individual needs of the student. We will discuss strategies to support the individualized needs of these students.

           Aides ACT Assessment Test - IU Employees
This is for IU 1 Paraprofessionals needing to meet Chapter 14 Regulations

During this session IU 1 paraprofessionals will take the paper and pencil test (Reading for Information, Math, and Writing) for meeting the highly qualified requirements for teacher aides under No Child Left Behind. You must bring a calculator.

           Aides Autism After School Special - Handwriting Without Tears
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals.

This training is specific to the school-aged IU 1 Autistic Support classroom teachers (including the LST/TSTs) and the Speech & Language Clinicians who service the classes. The focus of this workshop is the introduction and/or refresher of Handwriting Without Tears print and cursive strategies for grades K-5, including the newest techniques added to the curriculum.

           Aides Autism After School Special - Sensory Assessment and Interventions [A]
This workshop is for IU 1 AS Classroom Teachers, SLPs, and other Support Staff.

This workshop will provide the Autistic Support Teachers and their Support Staff an overview of sensory integration/processing. The focus of this training will be on the use of a newly adapted sensory reponse checklist and how to use a newly created sensory toolkit to be used with those students in the AS classes who demonstrate sensory dysfunctions.

           Aides Autism After School Special - Social and Communication Assessments and Interventions
This training is specific to the IU 1 Autistic Support classroom teachers and the Speech & Language Therapists who service the classes.

This workshop will address the two key deficit areas of social and communication skills for learners with Autisim Spectrum Disorders. The focus will be:
the assessment tools in Kathleen Ann Quill´s book - Do-Watch-Listen-Say, intervention strategies for social and communication interventions, and guidelines/tips/ideas to help design and creative an effective "Friends" social program.

           Aides Child Alert Staff: The Paraeducator´s Role in Facilitating the Development of Social Skills
This training is open to IU 1 Child Alert paraprofessionals only.

This session in for Child Alert paraprofessionals only. The session will address the paraeducator´s role in facilitating the development of social sills and age appropriate activities for the students in their care.

           Aides DynaVox 3100 and Series 4 Training
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals of students using DynVox 3100 and Series 4 devices.

At this workshop we will learn about DynaVox Systems´ philosophy and how to access services; learn about product hardware features, including ports, indicators and batteries; learn about DynaVox Setup menu; adjust controls to suit the needs of the communicator; explore button types and button fields; modify existing communication page; and build communication pages and pop ups. Advance training on the Series 4 will offer learning to manipulate objects on a communication page using Tools and Modify menus and learn to use digital images to create interactive communication pages.

           Aides DynaVox Series 4 Basic Training, Series V Overview
This workshop is by invitation only. It is limited to the autism staff at Trinity West and Trinity High.

This session will focus on basic programming skills for the DynaVox Series 4 devices. Hands on interactive programmimng experiences will be provided. A Brief overview of the DynaVox V will also be conducted.

           Aides LAMP - An AAC Strategy for Promoting the Development of Communication for Individuals with ASD
This session is for Paraprofessionals to register. All others shoul dregister for the session withoiut the word "Aides" in front of the title.

An overview of the LAMP training and how it promotes language development will be addressed in the morning session. The afternoon session will be devoted to utilizing the Vantage Lite (a Prentke Romich Co. Speech Generating Device) to incorporate the LAMP principles into classroom academic and therapy objectives.

           Aides Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Initial Training
This training is for Paraprofessionals who need their initial NCI training. This is the initial training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention as per the IU 1 Behavior Management Policy.
           Aides Nonviolent Crisis Intervention RefresherTraining
This workshop is for Paraprofessionals.

This is a refresher training in Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention.

    The objectives of this course include:
  1. Develop a greater understanding of course concepts
  2. Problem solve and strengthen crisis intervention skills
  3. Receive additional supporting information
  4. Demonstrate ability and confidence in applying course content and skills to real-life work experiences.

This training will discusss these techniques with a focus on creating a pleasant learning environment, conducting a motivational analysis and utilizing an effective response to intervention strategy.
