Continuous School Improvement: Developing a School Improvement Plan Days 2 and 3
This registration is for those who are attending the remaining two days of the Continuous School Improvement: Developing a School Improvement Plan that started on August 7, 2008.
This registration is for non-PIL Administration and teachers.
Participants must attend the required sessions, complete all assignments and develop a school improvement plan that is determined by Intermediate Unit 1 to meet the PDE guidelines to receive credit/hours.
The following Core Standards will be addressed in the course/program:
II. An understanding of standards-based systems theory and design and the ability to transfer that knowledge to the leader’s job as an architect of standards based reform in the school.
III. The ability to access and use appropriate data to inform decision-making at all levels of the system.
Participants in this course/program will attend a series of sessions that overview the Pennsylvania school improvement process and requirements. During the sessions, the participants will also receive technical assistance in the development of their plans.
Participants will join the 14 hours of instructional sessions and additional hours of embedded assignments. This course/program will last from August – November with a follow up based on the PA Department of Education monitoring requirements.
Session 1. GETTING RESULTS!™ is the continuous school improvement planning framework uniquely customized for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In the first session, the instructors will overview the Pennsylvania school improvement process and requirements. Participants will bring data access IDs and data reports, and they will begin Phase 1 of the process which is to ORGANIZE and REVIEW DATA. Participants will include multiple data sources, including summative, formative, and perceptual data. Participants will be assigned the task of completing all data entry and organization in preparation for Session II. School teams will be asked to identify a time for their school improvement plan review. The instructors will emphasize the importance Participants will meet with other school staff as needed.
Session 2. Participants will begin Phase 2, ANALYZE DATA and DISCOVER “root cause” in Session 2. The Getting Result Framework for Phase 2 offers worksheets and protocols for carrying out two complementary exercises:
- Analyzing data from multiple perspectives, in a way that “paints a portrait” of the current state of student learning and achievement, and facilitates identification of the Areas of Strength and Areas of Concern based solely on student data.
Finding the underlying causes (i.e., “root cause”) of the current state of student achievement. This phase provides Guiding Questions to facilitate the identification of the “vital few” research-based or promising strategies to be implemented by the school. The guiding questions are based on the six elements of Pennsylvania’s standards-aligned instructional system (i.e., clear standards; fair assessments; standards-aligned curriculum; instruction; instructional materials & resources; interventions), and the four “lenses” of Quality Teaching, Quality Leadership, Artful Use of Infrastructure, and Continuous Learning Ethic. The instructors will help the participants understand the meaning of root cause. Participants will prepare for Session 3. Out of class assignments will include completing all of the components of Phase II and meeting with additional school staff as needed to begin Phase 3.
Session 3. Participants will continue to work on Phase 3, PLAN SOLUTION, which lays out the detailed action steps, using the Action Sequence… in 1-2-3-4-5 Steps! templates. The instructors will review the Action Step Sequence and share resources/strategies/interventions with large and small groups of participants. For the embedded assignment, participants will complete the plan for the scheduled review in Session 4 and complete the PDE completion checklist or rubric.
Session 4.
School teams will present their school improvement plans to the Intermediate Unit 1 review team. Revisions to the plan will be made as needed. Plans will be sent to PDE.
Final Project
The final product will be the completed school improvement plan and its presentation. The plan will be provided in hard copy and in an electronic version. The plan will identify not only school strengths, but develop action steps to increase student achievement in regard to AYP targets.

Science Instruction through Case Studies
This workshop is for Grade 7-12 Science Teachers.
This session focuses on how to teach understandings about Inquiry (the work of scientists) in a meaningful way using case studies to effectively involve students in the learning process. The goal of case method teaching is not so much to teach the content of science (although that does happen) but to teach how the process of science works and to develop higher-order skills of learning including comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
Cases are a good way to illustrate the relevance of science in society and are suited to the collaborative/cooperative learning format in small groups but can easily be used in whole-group discussion. The use of case studies in science should encourage students to critically appraise stories about science they hear through the media, to have a more positive attitude about science, to understand the process of science and its limitations, and to be able to ask more critical questions.
The IU1 Center for STEM Education has arranged for Barbara Lease (MSC/MSP Coordinator, High School Science) to present this workshop. Lunch will be provided.

Dr. Scott Garrigan from the Center for Advancing Partnerships in Education (CAPE) will provide the instruction for this workshop and it is his intent to make it easy for teachers to try interactive simulations with their students. The use of visual simulations to model science concepts can help students interpret results, anticipate results in new but similar situations, modify variables and grasp otherwise hard to understand concepts that are either too small to see, too long or too quick to comprehend or to complex or dangerous to be completed in school lab. This new use of software will improve student learning and integrate technology in the classroom.

This workshop is for Middle School and High School Science Teachers and meets the following professional development criteria: Science content, reading comprehension, and teaching skills.
Science Matters is proud to sponsor this 1 day workshop. Bill Metz and Julia Gooding are coming to IU 1 to present their Inquiry by Design workshop. This is a unique approach to science lesson design and presentation in the Middle School and High School classroom. Whether you are using a kit program, a textbook or a self-developed curriculum, this strategy is a valuable asset for all science teachers. It is an instructional strategy for teachers who want to raise the cognitive level of their existing lessons by challenging their students to apply what they have learned. It is not intended to replace the regular science curriculum, but rather to supplement and enhance it, using content/concept application lessons in conjunction with your established science curriculum.
Teachers must bring 1-5 lesson plans or their textbook to the workshop. The workshop will include demonstrations of Design Brief lessons, strategies for gauging student understanding and a work session to help participants transform their own lessons into Design Briefs. Each participants will receive a copy of the book "Inquiry by Design" and lunch will be provided.

Project-based Learning: Buck Institute for Education
Buck Institute for Education, located in California, is at the forefront of professional development that models project-based instruction. Through the IU1 STEM Center, we are able to bring these educational leaders to our Intermediate Unit for a 2-day workshop in April 2009. This is a unique opportunity and we would like to encourage districts to send their STEM teachers in grades 7-12 to the workshop. In this two-day workshop, participants will learn the design principles for creating and managing standards-focused activities. These activities prepare teachers to design, conduct and assess their own classroom projects. Through a combination of instruction and group work, workshop participants have the opportunity to plan and discuss a fully-designed project.
Districts are encouraged to send teachers of science, technology, engineering and math. The workshop will focus on grades 7-12.
This workshop was arranged by the IU1 Center for STEM Education. Beverages and lunch will be provided.
