09-10: Bil/ESL: TExES Exam Preparation

This 12 hour course is designed to prepare certified teachers to take the ESL Supplemental 154 TExES exam and obtain ESL Certification. In addition, each teacher will be able to develop a core set of competencies needed to teach ESL students. The following topics will be covered: language concepts and language acquisition; ESL instruction, building students’ background knowledge, using comprehensible input, word walls, language objectives, assessment; cultural awareness, family and community involvement; and there will be preview and practice for the TExES questions. A manual with the content and practice pages will be provided for each attendee.
The Bil/ESL Department offers the course at no cost to Irving ISD teachers 4 times a year. If you are interested in taking the ESL Supplement TExES choose one of these trainings to attend.

A variety of staff development sessions have been designed to inform principals about implementing the English Language Proficiency Standards, How LPAC/TELPAS information is used to improve classroom instruction, and how ARISE strategies help build a language rich classroom.

Teachers and LPAC administrators that attend these meetings will receive updates on state and federal guidelines, with discussion on using data to develop instrucional plans that increase rigor for ELLs. Participants will receive information on upcoming staff development, parent involvement, the required monitoring of ELLs in additiona to an in-depth training on how an LPAC is required to function.

09-10: Bil/ESL: Rosetta Stone Training - Secondary
This class will demonstrate how students use Rosetta Stone. Each participant will work on the Rosetta Stone Manager solution that comes with the program. We will practice how to register learners, create smart lists, run reports, individualize students´ learning, and monitor students´ progress. Audience: Rosetta Stone Student Program Managers. STARS teachers Subcategory

During these PLCs, the STARS teachers will share successful activities and strategies; seek input for specific instructional concerns; consultation for specific student concerns; review accomplished and up-coming responsibilities and share logistical concerns about students and materials.
