This workshop brings together nationally acclaimed master storyteller, David Gonzalez, with area teachers to help break down the elements of storytelling and discuss the genre of mythology as a vehicle to transmit stories so that they come to life in the imagination of the audience. We know mythology as a form of story that seeks to explain or rationalize one or more aspects of the world or society. We teach mythology in the Michigan Merit Curriculum, but do we embrace it as a genre, have fun with it and make mythology engaging and memorable for students? As a prequel to the Wharton Center Act One School Series on January 22, 2010 (http://www.whartoncenter.com/education/schoolseries.aspx), David Gonzalez (http://www.davidgonzalez.com/frame) will perform a portion of his show, Mytholojazz, where he tells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Mr. Gonzalez has performed at the Royal National Theatre in London, Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian and the National Holocaust Museum and taught for ten years at the New York University School of Education from which he holds a doctorate in music therapy.
