Educational Strategies for Students with Austism Spectrum Disorders 2009-2010
This Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START) module will teach participants to use
educational strategies that build upon strengths of the student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Appropriate educational supports for students with ASD will be defined including: effective behavioral
systems, visual strategies, paraprofessional support, functional communication systems, team process,
and peer-to-peer support. Participants will learn to develop age appropriate curriculum and build on
strengths and skills of students with ASD through appropriate educational activities. They will also
learn to appropriately accommodate and modify curriculum. Transition needs relevant to students with
ASD will be addressed. Workshops will be held at Eaton ISD. Facilitators Roni Hulbert, Patti O’Brien,
Kendra Reighard (October 1-2, 2009), Amy Smith, and Mary Talarico (March 10-11, 2010). Please register through Eaton ISD, Register Here
Effective Behavior Supports for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders 2009-2010
The Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START) Module will teach participants to collect data
through the functional assessment processes and to use that information to guide the development of
behavioral strategies and to develop a positive behavior support plan for children with autism.
Participation as a team around a targeted student is preferred. Facilitators: Tracy Keating, Terri Peters,
DeAnn Schwarz, Tanya Stokes (November 3 & 11, 2009); Linda Miller, Kendra Reighard, Michael Zivsak (April 19 & 26, 2010). Please register through Eaton ISD Register Here
Functional Behavior Assessments and Effective Behavior Supports 2009-2010
[A]
Participants will gain an understanding of positive behavior support (PBS), functional behavioral assessment (FBA), and behavior intervention planning (BIP). Participants will learn to collect data through the functional assessment process and to use that information to guide the development of behavioral strategies. A team problem-solving process for implementing PBS and effectively and efficiently conducting FBA and developing BIP will also be presented. Participants will learn the skills necessary to utilize this process in their local districts.

Overview of Universal Supports for Students with ASD 2009-2010
This Statewide Autism Resources and Training (START) module will provide an overview of Autism
Spectrum Disorders (ASD) including definitions, current theories, and research. The second portion of
the module covers the supports considered critical for the vast majority of students with ASD. These
supports are those identified as highly effective in teaching and supporting students with ASD in order
to provide a solid foundation for learning. A team process for developing a universal support plan is
presented and specific supports such as functional communication systems, visual supports, structured
environments, peer-to-peer support, and behavioral programming are presented. Although this session
addresses students with ASD, these universal supports are effective for students with other disabilities
as well. Facilitators: Lisa Basore, Harmonee Costello (September 22, 2009); MaryBeth Chasse, Jen Shaw, Wanda Weston (February 23, 2010). Please register through Eaton ISD Register Here
