GCS-PROFDEV: Does Vocabulary Affect Academic Development - R70401
Description:
Participants will examine skills, procedures, and methods needed to provide direct and explicit vocabulary instruction. Using the research of Janet Allen and Robert Marzano, participants will develop a repertoire of effective strategies for teaching vocabulary in all core subject areas as a means to increase reading comprehension, to develop knowledge of new concepts, and to improve all areas of communication.

Target Audience:
Middle and High School Teachers.

Learner Outcomes:
Learner Outcomes: 1) Participants will know the value of direct vocabulary instruction in increasing reading comprehension in all core subjects. 2) Participants will explore interactive strategies for increasing students’ vocabulary acquisition. 3) Participants will learn various methods of incorporating direct vocabulary instruction into their lessons. 4) Participants will plan and share lessons that model effective vocabulary instruction.

Prerequisite:
Successful completion of the thirty hour course – GCS: Reading in the Content Area.
