Description: Participants will build on the foundation of reading strategies and best practices acquired in the course, READING IN THE CONTENT AREA, to improve the process of acquiring meaning from expository (non-fiction) text. These methods will focus on engaging readers Before, During, and After the actual reading process so as to increase comprehension and retention of content area materials.
Target Audience: Middle and High School Teachers.
Learner Outcomes: As a result of this course, participants will:
1) Become aware of the importance of non-fiction text due to the amount of information provided through this medium.
2) Learn best practices which will teach students how to read, write, discuss, listen, and remember information presented -within content area materials.
3) View reading as an interactive process in which students must become engaged with text before, during, and after
-reading in order to gain understanding of the materials.
4) Practice scaffolded instruction to promote student management of challenging text materials.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of the thirty hour course - GCS: READING IN THE CONTENT AREA.
