Kathleen DuVal is an associate professor of history and has been at UNC since 2003. Her research and teaching focus on early America, particularly cross-cultural relations between Europeans and Indians in the North American borderlands that she explored in her first book, The Native Ground: Indians and Colonists in the Heart of the Continent. She also teaches classes on cultural identities and race in early America, Spanish borderlands, the American colonial experience, and early nation-making in America. Given her diverse teaching and research interests, this should be another exciting and engaging workshop!

Participants will read and evaluate books for middle and high school students. Discussions and annotations will focus on genres, including graphic novels. An additional focus will be on using book talks as a motivational strategy and using picture books with older readers. The design of the workshop is based on the 2007-2008 staff development survey. All sessions will be held from 4:00-6:00. Renewal credit (1.0 CEU) will be given for successful completion of the workshop.

Description:
A representative provided by SRA will instruct participants on how to implement the Corrective Reading Program. Corrective reading provides intensive intervention for students in Grades 3-12 who are reading one or more years below grade level. This program delivers tighlty sequenced, carefully planned lessons that give struggling students the structure and practice necessary to become skilled, fluent readers and better learners. Four levels of decoding plus four for comprehension address the varied reading deficits and skill levels found among older students. Includes a point system based on realistic goals to motivate students who are expected to fail.
           S/FAI-SRA: Reading Mastery
Description:
Reading Mastery is a systematic intensive direct instruction program. It is researched based and aligns with NCLB recommendations.
