These workshop sessions introduce teachers to social studies curriculum units from the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum (MC3) based on the new social studies content expectations. The courses are designed for teachers to examine best practices, learn practical instructional strategies, explore literature connections to social studies content, and review techniques that foster content area literacy.

The courses are designed for teachers to examine best practices, learn practical instructional strategies, explore literature connections to social studies content, and review techniques that foster content area literacy. Focus: implementation of new social studies content expectations for the United States Studies course.

7th Grade Social Studies Network
This workshop introduces teachers to social studies curriculum units from the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum (MC3) based on the new social studies content expectations. The course is designed for teachers to examine best practices, learn practical instructional strategies, explore literature connections to social studies content, and review techniques that foster content area literacy. Focus: Two units of study will be highlighted, Unit 2: africa - People, Places, and Issues, and Unit 4: East Asia - People, Places, and Issues. This course will deepen teacher knowledge of geography.

These sessions introduce teachers to the Civics and Government course from the MC3 based on the new social studies content expectations. Three units of study will be highlighted. This is an ITV session.
High School US History
This workshop is designed to deepen teacher knowledge of content, examine unique features of the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum (MC3) materials, and learn practical research-based instructional strategies for use in your classroom Focus: US History and Geography course from the MC3. Three units of study will be highlighted: Units 1, 2, and 10. These sessions are interactive and include roundtable discussions with historians.
High School World History & Geography

This workshop is designed to deepen teacher knowledge of content, examine unique features of the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum (MC3) materials, and learn practical, research-based instructional strategies. This session explores Unit 4, Era 6 of the World History and Geography course from MC3. Teachers have the opportunity to pilot model assessment based on the unit of study.

Inquiry in Instruction - Inquiring Minds Need to Know
Genesee Area Math/Science Center and Lapeer Math/Science Center are collaborating to offer HS-MASS III: I Cubed - Inquiry In Instruction. Session 1 is at Lapeer Educational Technology Center on September 23, 2009. Session 2 is at Genesee ISD. Participants are expected to attend both sessions. HS-MASS is a statewide collaborative effort of the Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network to provide high school teachers with professional development opportunities for help in understanding the new science and mathematics components of the High School Merit Curriculum and associated testing and implications for teaching and learning in their classrooms.

Program Announcement
Genesee Intermediate School District hosts, Dr. Robert Marzano in Flint, November 18, 2009, at the Holiday Inn Gateway Center.
Program is currently FULL. Continue with registration process to get your name on the waiting list. We will be meeting with site management to discuss space capacity. You will be notified via email no later than November 6 if you will be allowed to attend. Dr. Marzano will address three commitments that need to be made to students for serious school improvement that enhances the systemic effectiveness of districts and schools.
The three commitments are:A system of feedback to individual students that is based on formative assessmentsGuaranteeing the use of effective instructional practices in every classroom, andEnhancing the academic vocabulary and background knowledge of students
Registration restricted to Genesee County until October 1. Effective October 1, open registration to all state educators will be allowed.
Note: NO on site registrations. Program scheduled 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Doors open at 8:00 a.m. for check-in and seating.
