Sexuality Institute for Grades 4-6, Regional - March 2 & 3 , 2010

Audience:
4th – 6th grade teachers responsible for teaching puberty education

Course Narrative:
State recognized training for sexuality educators in Michigan. This workshop will focus on topics relevant to 4th -6th grade programming. These will include the law and advisory council requirements, age appropriate activities that address hygiene, puberty education, healthy relationships, current trends and data on youth, what works in sexuality education and more.

Course Objectives:
Workshop attendees will:

  • Understand the legal implications for teaching reproductive health/sex education.
  • Explore the abstinence framework surrounding sex education within Michigan’s schools.
  • Evaluate 4-6 teaching materials for components of Michigan’s 4-6 abstinence framework.
  • Discuss various aspects of reproductive health appropriate for the 4-6 level; anatomy, human growth & development, HIV/AIDS, etc.
  • Practice answering sensitive classroom questions following district guidelines.
  • Demonstrate age-appropriate teaching strategies and educational materials.

Cost: $50/day or $75 for both days

Credit:
SB-CEUs or SVSU, upon application approval.
