Differentiated Instruction
Steve Kahl, award-winning high school teacher and current practitioner, has presented differentiated instruction sessions to hundreds of schools throughout California. With his vast knowledge on the topic, as well as his many years of exemplary teaching experience, he will be demonstrating how to combine routine formative assessments, rigorous tiered assignments, and engaging project menus to serve a continuum of learners. Although Steve is a secondary teacher, elementary teachers have also found his presentations to be useful and engaging.
Participants will engage in the writing or revising of a current lesson, incorporating their new understanding. Please bring a current lesson plan to work with during the workshop.

HIV/AIDS Certification Workshop for Grades 4-12, Regional

Audience: Any teacher responsible for teaching HIV/AIDS education. Course Narrative: HIV/AIDS education is required in Michigan. This workshop will also meet the state requirement that any teacher engaged in HIV/AIDS education must receive training.Topics will include the law, effective curriculum, and hands on activities. Literacy Leader Training

Literacy Leader
This course is for K-6 educators whose role it is to be a Literacy Leader in their building or district. Four training dates, spread across the school year, will provide participants a chance to gain and share ideas with other literacy leaders in the area. The focus of the course will be on understanding systematic and systemic instructional strategies, data analysis and curriculum planning to improve literacy in the building. We´ll take a closer look into Response to Intervention and discuss the implementation of schedules and teacher training necessary to provide the differentiated instruction needed for increased student achievement. Participants will be given templates useful in data collection as well as formats for agendas to be used by facilitators in staff meetings and team meetings. Prior training in elementary literacy, RTI and/or professional learning communities (PLC´s) would be helpful.

MDE Sponsored MI World Language Graduation Requirement
The Michigan Merit Curriculum is designed to provide Michigan´s students with the skills and knowledge needed for the jobs of the 21st century global economy. This new curriculum requires all students beginning with the graduating class of 2016 (6th graders in 2009-2010) to successfully complete two credits in the same world language or have an equivalent learning experience in grades K-12. This session is designed to clarify the new Michigan World Language Credit/ Experience Guidelines as well as the new Michigan World Language Standards and Benchmarks. Participants have opportunity to discuss curriculum and possible methods of assessments, identify resources, develop a district plan to implement the new requirement which focuses on solutions to local challenges.
Districts are encouraged to register a team which includes administrators, curriculum directors and world language teachers.
Michigan Model for Health, Grades 9-12--Nutrition and Physical Activity Modules
This workshop will focus on the Nutrition and Physical Activity Modules (Stay Physically Active-For Life and Help Yourself to Good Nutrition for grades 9-12.
Participants will:
- Connect the implementation of school heatlh education to Michigan´s Health Education Content Standards and Grade Level Expectations
- Create an understanding of philosophy and goals of the Michigan Model
- Develop a comfort level for using the curriculum manual
- Disseminate current and accurate health content knowledge
- Preview instructional materials used in the curriculum

Mission Literacy for MS/HS

Mission Literacy: for MS/HS
Can you actually teach adolescents to become better at reading and comprehension? The answer is YES! Michigan´s Mission Possible is a statewide literacy initiative that was designed to improve high school achievement, high school graduation rates, and college readiness rates for middle and high school students. During the course, participants will be led through the Mission Literacy website that will support the teaching of comprehension, fluency, and word knowledge through the use of ready to use resources for the classroom teacher. Ideas for read alouds, guided reading for middle school and secondary students and using the inquiry approach for middle school and secondary students will be explored. This course is appropriate for all middle school and secondary educators looking for a way to improve the reading ability of adolescent learners in their subject area.
New Teacher Program 2009-2010

As a new teacher, you bring many qualities to your classroom and school - a fresh outlook, new energy, and lots of ideas. At the same time, you may be wondering about the realities of day-to-day teaching, working with other teachers in the building, best strategies to use for discipline problems and understanding all of the new curriculum expectations and the focus on student achievement.
In this New Teacher program, you will meet other new teachers joining the staffs of Gratiot and Isabella county schools to begin the Fall 2009 school year. Together we will explore the topics that all new teachers need to know! In addition, you will meet the requirements for new teachers set forth by the Michigan Department of Education for five days of professional development above and beyond what your district offers.
Olympic Physical Education Program

K-12 Physical Education Teachers and School Administrators
Course Narrative:
This workshop is open to all K-12 physical educators and school administrators. The workshop will focus on the new Michigan Department Education Standards, Benchmarks, Grade Level Content Expectations, and the Michigan Merit Curriculum Guidelines. Participants will learn the components of the new framework, develop strategies to align local curriculum with the new requirements, and develop instructional materials that will support the implementation and assessment of effective physical education programs in local districts. It will also include techniques for creating a guaranteed and viable curriculum as well as strategies for using data to inform instruction.

These will include the law and advisory council requirements, age appropriate activities that address hygiene, puberty education, healthy relationships, current trends and data on youth, what works in sexuality education and more.
Course Objectives: Workshop attendees will: -
Understand the legal implications for teaching reproductive health/sex education.

Explore the abstinence framework surrounding sex education within Michigan’s schools.

Evaluate 4-6 teaching materials for components of Michigan’s 4-6 abstinence framework.

Discuss various aspects of reproductive health appropriate for the 4-6 level; anatomy, human growth & development, HIV/AIDS, etc.

Using Advanc-Ed to Build Your School/District Improvement Plan Work Session

School Improvement Plans Going Live On Line!
Michigan Department of Education in partnership with NCA Advanc-Ed has launched an on line school improvement planning site for all public schools and districts in our state. Using this electronic tool, school buildings will be creating and submitting their School Improvement Plans by September 1 and local Districts will be creating and submitting Improvement Plans by June 30 through this electronic website. GI RESD has scheduled training days for teams to work on developing and submitting their plans scheduled for February 23 and March 2, 2010. GI RESD Instruction staff is also available to work on site with buildings and districts to assist with identifying goals, strategies, and activities in order to meet the needs of all students. The school improvement planning process is key to identifying goals and strategies based on research to improve student achievement in areas of need.
