Are you tired of having your students answer questions or write a summary after reading a nonfiction piece in the content areas? Nonfiction Reading can be a challenge for both students and teachers. Learn and experience the benefits of providing time for students to process their investigations with nonfiction text. Motivating, interactive, energizing, and cooperative comprehension strategies will be presented using a variety of nonfiction poems, articles, and excerpts. Everything can be used back in your classroom immediately!

           Comprehending Math: Using Reading Strategies to Teach Mathematics
Audience: All educators teaching mathematics in grades K-6

Discover practical ways to improve students´ understanding and achievement in mathematics by adapting reading comprehension strategies for students to use in mathematics.

Help students develop self- awareness and monitoring in mathematics by showing how to make connections, ask questions, visualize, infer, predict, determine importance, and synthesize in math the way they have learned to use these strategies in reading.

           Developing Mathematical Ideas: All About Operations!
Audience: K-8 Mathematics Teachers and Leaders.

DMI is a professional Development curriculum series designed by the staff and participants o the Teaching to the Big Ideas project. The curriculum is designed to help teachers think through the major ideas of elementary and Middle school mathematics and examine how students develop those idea.

DMI curriculum is well grounded in the pedagogy ad content of standards-based mathematical learning opportunities, both for children and adult learners. they provide a rigorous model or teachers to follow in their own mathematical instructions.

           Discovering the Possibilities with Nonfiction Mentor Texts [A]
Audience: All K-8 Educators THIS IS A SATURDAY WORKSHOP

The workshop will explore how to create a sense of wonder and curiosity in your students through nonfiction reading and writing. Teachers will learn how to use the writer’s notebook to discover possibilities for nonfiction investigations, poetry, nature journaling, and other forms of writing.

The concept of mentor texts and a structure for writing workshop will be discussed through theory and practice. Forming essential questions and finding appropriate writing topics, developing content, and writing effective introductions and conclusions will be modeled and practiced.

In addition, the importance of creating nonfiction pieces with voice and exact word choice will be connected to mentor texts and student samples as well as persuasive writing possibilities.

           Ignite Student Engagement & Learning: R.A.D. Strategies in Math and Science
Audience: K-12 Mathematics & Science Teachers and Leaders

This workshop is restricted to Professional Employee teachers who are employed by the following districts that are members of the BCIU Math & Science Collaborative: The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools in Bucks County, Bensalem Township, Bristol Borough, Bristol Township, Centennial, Central Bucks, Council Rock, Morrisville, Neshaminy, New Hope/ Solebury, Palisades, Pennridge, Pennsbury, Quakertown and Eligible Nonpublic Schools in Bucks County.

•Understand that no learning enters the cognitive brain unless we propel the sensory input through the brain filters.

•Gain strategies to sustain student attention and control focus, turning information into working memory and consolidating working memory into long term memory

•Learn strategies to differentiate math and science instruction.

•Become familiar with current research on R.A.D.

•Gain classroom-ready tools to help students achieve their maximum potential using brain research-based strategies.

In this session, participants will learn how to find podcasts on the Internet to use in their classrooms as well as learn how to create audio files and even develop a class radio show. No prior computer knowledge is necessary to participate and free software {Audacity) will be shared that can be installed at home or at school.

           Sue O´Connell: Differentiating Instruction in the Math Classroom [A]
Audience: Mathematics Teachers and Leaders Grades 3-8

This workshop is restricted to Professional Employee teachers who are employed by the following districts that are members of the BCIU Math & Science Collaborative: The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Schools in Bucks County, Bensalem Township, Bristol Borough, Bristol Township, Centennial, Central Bucks, Council Rock, Morrisville, Neshaminy, New Hope/ Solebury, Palisades, Pennridge, Pennsbury, Quakertown and Eligible Nonpublic Schools in Bucks County.

This workshop explores practical and effective ways that teachers can differentiate instruction, support varied learning styles, and modify math tasks in order to better meet the needs of all learners in their classrooms. Topics include:

·incorporating varied instructional strategies to address students’ learning styles

·modifying instruction through flexible grouping

·conducting mini-workshops to reteach or enhance skills/concepts

·facilitating cooperative groups to promote differentiation

·developing tiered tasks

·modifying math tasks to better meet the needs of varied levels of students (guidelines for modifying tasks will be shared)

Over the past few years Web 2.0 tool have become an exciting part of many teachers´ classrooms. These tools include wikis, blogs, and podcasts. In this workshop teachers will learn about wikis, using one of the most "education friendly" versions called Wikispaces.

Wikis bring powerful yet easy to use collaboration to every aspect of the learning experience. Some of the ways wikis are being used in classrooms today include:

Class Websites, Collaborative Projects, Peer Assessments, E-Portfolios, Professional Development and Parental Engagement.

In this workshop participants will explore the world of Writer’s Notebooks. Every teacher will receive a copy of Ralph Fletcher’s book. The resources will serve as a guide for what a Writers Notebook is, what it is not, and how this powerful tool can strengthen and enliven the writing classroom. Teachers will spend time generating ideas, sharing writing, and experiencing the various uses for notebooks. Participants will also delve into the most difficult part of utilizing a writers notebook: revisiting “seed ideas” planted in the notebook and growing them into drafts.
