5. Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Category
Benefits of Common Formative and Summative Assessments
[A]
Audience: K-12 teachers
Course Narrative: The most effective strategies are those which direct students toward a conclusion
and most often toward a successful assessment. What teachers use in the
assessment process is as important as what they use in the instructional process.
What standards do we use? What measurement do we use? How often do we
assess? This class will utilize the theories and practical applications developed by Marzano and others, and will focus on the standards that lead to assessment. Teacher-leaders will work with the Pearson Assessment system to develop standards-based assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Course Objectives: Participants will learn about effective assessments for students and will also learn effective ways of developing assessments by using the Pearson Benchmark system at BAISD.
Dates: 11/4/2009, 12/2/2009, 2/24/2010, 3/24/2010, 4/7/2010, 5/5/2010 Time: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Curriculum Goes Wild
[A]
Audience: K-12 Teachers
Course Narrative: Collaboration in districts is always a challenge! And, the understanding of standards and practical implementation is equally daunting.
In six sessions (and 10 hours of online interaction), this course will help districts identify staff who will work with administrators to be responsible for working with, updating and communicating effective uses of standards. As districts work toward their own alignment process, key people - Curriculum Chiefs - can be those points of contact who will develop, organize and maintain the documents produced within the district. Curriculum Chiefs will facilitate the district-adopted curriculum process within the district and guide it to a conclusion that provides direction to each teacher and raises student performance in each building.
Course Objectives: Participants will learn how to develop a curriculum plan for their building/district. Understanding the theories behind curriculum mapping and assessment development, the district-identified "Curriculum Chiefs" will support their administration in developing a successful curriculum process that meets their needs.

SCASS/HEAP Workshop: Using the national Health Education Assessment Program database...
Course Narrative: SCASS/HEAP stands for the State Collaborative on Assessment of Student Standards Health Education Assessment Program. This database of items is an extremely useful tool for creating assessment exams for your required health education programs and for creating pre/post tests to evaluate your sex education program. All schools with an approved sex education program are required by law to evaluate the program for changes in knowledge and skills that are likely to reduce the rates of sex, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. Participants can bring their own laptop or use one that is provided. If you are bringing your school´s laptop, ask your tech person to remove anything that would prevent you from downloading the database. You will receive a CD of all the assessment items and tools that you can download to your school´s computer. Note: The SCASS/HEAP database consists of secured test items used
in many states to assess health education. A security agreement with each user is required. Only
teachers responsible for health education can sign the agreement but they can share it with other
health teachers in their school.
