Collins Writing: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (2017-18)
Session: 1572
On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, ARIN will host a workshop entitled Collins Writing: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm at the Indiana Career Link Office. This session will prepare teachers to implement Collins Writing to support students in Text Dependent Analysis items and evidence-based reading and writing across a wide range of content areas.

Evidence-Based Reading and Writing is a new offering from Collins Education Associates that requires no background knowledge of the Collins Writing Program. It is a schoolwide approach for grades 3-12. During the session, John Collins will present the following topics:

  • Five guidelines to help prepare students for TDAs, DBQs, and the SAT and promote a wide range of content-based reading
  • Key elements of evidence-based prompts
  • Essential general academic vocabulary that appears most frequently in evidence-based prompts for grades 3–12
  • Writing techniques that help students create clear central idea statements, retain content, and improve word choice
  • Three reading strategies that help students preview, closely read, and engage with complex text
  • Four strategies to cite textual evidence that lead to more sophisticated writing

This workshop is for teachers of grades 3-12. The cost for the workshop is $125 which includes lunch and participant materials. Six Act 48 hours will be awarded for completion.

NOTE: Please register by one week prior to the start of the activity to avoid a $10 late registration fee.Registration closes April 17, 2018.
