This class provides a basic understanding of the management of diabetes (high/low
blood sugar, medications, counting carbohydrates, insulin pumps, etc) in the school
setting under the delegation and supervision of a school nurse consultant.
This is intensive training for the non-medical staff providing care to a diabetic student.
Topics include:
- Understanding how diabetes affects the body
- Medications
- Managing high and low blood sugar
- Counting carbohydrates
- Insulin pumps
- Ketone testing
It will be an interactive class providing hands on training with a glucometer, insulin pumps and injections. There will be presentations by guest speakers as well as videos used during the class.
Please bring dinner to eat in class.
Target Audience: health assistants, paraprofessionals, trainers, coaches or other staff interested in learning more about diabetes.
