           Para Educator Training 09-10 [A]
TARGET AUDIENCE:
  • Para Educators
DESCRIPTION:
The Learning Center in collaboration with ISS will begin the third year of Para-educator Orientation trainings. The sessions are open to all education paras. They are usually held on three consecutive Friday afternoons at the Center for Staff and Community Development. The goal is to provide job-specific training necessary for paras to become skilled and successful in their jobs. Studies show that trained employees feel more competent and it increases the percentage of employee retention as well as job satisfaction.

Topics will include:

Roles/ Responsibilities of Para-educators including Assignment Modification

  • Differences in the para’s role and the professional’s role
  • Ethical and legal responsibilitie
  • Workplace ethics
  • Leading students to independent behaviors
  • How to provide direct and explicit instruction
  • What inclusion means and does not mean
  • The differences between adaptation, accommodation and modification

Behavior Management:

  • Understanding what behavior is
  • Behavior skills that foster learning
  • Tool box of interventions and strategies
  • How to prevent burnout

Autism:

  • Spectrum Disorders
  • Autism myths
  • Facts/ statistics
  • Tools and interventions

Literacy/Writing:

This year we will also offer a training on how to help students with literacy and writing needs. An in-depth look into how brains approach the tasks of understanding language arts: listening, speaking, writing and reading. Participants will gain an understanding of the intricacy of these skills and useful strategies for helping students. This pilet section will only be offered 3 times for the 09-10 school year on a First Come First Serve basis.

Skills and Self-improvement Category

           Beginning Sign Language
Instructional Hours = 15 Hours
CDE Re-Licensure Credit = 1 Credit
Knowledge Level Advancement = 1 Credit

 

This class is intended for individuals who have never taken a sign language class.

**This is the same class as the former American Sign Language - Level 1. Employees that previousley attended the ASL class may not receive credit or payment.**

It will start at the very basic of learning the sign alphabet and finger spelling words. Basic vocabulary will then be introduced. Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to have a simple conversation in sign language.

The class will participate in activities that will enrich their learning experience.

Such activities will include but not limited to:

  • Interacting with deaf/hard of hearing individuals
  • Watching videos in sign language
  • Games and puzzles in ASL (American Sign Language)
  • Active group participation
Participants will be shown an online sign vocabulary website and will compile a sign dictionary for reference.

This class will help those individuals that would like to learn how to communicate with people having a hearing or speech disability that utilizes Sign Language as mode of communication – whether they are students or adults.

               Creating a Safe & Positive Playground [A]

    Systematic Supervision Creating a Safe & Positive Playground

    Recess! That important time of day when students can give their minds a break and their bodies to do what growing bodies are meant to do: run, jump, climb, swing and play.

    Systematic Supervision will help to reduce negative behavior and increase positive behavior on the playground as well as make playground supervisors jobs easier and more rewarding. Participants will learn six tested and effective positive behavior support techniques that they can put into practice immediately.

    Staff will learn how to:

    • Create and maintain Positive Behavior Support techniques
    • Establish and maintain a positive environment and relationship with students
    • Focus on positive, appropriate behaviors
    • Keeping track of playground behavior with movement and scanning methods
    • Responding effectively and efficiently to problem behavior
    • Working as a team to support appropriate student behavior

               Do Your Words Nurture or Hurt?

    Description:

    “Do Your Words Nurture or Hurt?” teaches staff members how to provide feedback to students in a way that boosts self-esteem. Sometimes we say things to nurture, but our well-intentioned remarks have the opposite effect.

     

    In this course participants will:

    • Learn when and how to give feedback to students
    • Assess whether your words nurture or hurt
    • Learn how to motivate without affecting a child’s self-esteem

    This is an inter-active course that explores how to put the principles from the book, FISH, into practice at your work site and home.

    FISH contains the keys to creating an innovative work environment where a playful, attentive, and engaging attitude leads to more energy, enthusiasm, productivity, and creativity. Participants will leave with specific ideas that can be implemented at your own work site.


    PREREQUISITE:

    • You must have read the book, FISH, by Stephen C. Lundin before attending class.
    • The class will focus on implementing the concepts described in the book.

    This class will focus on using the vocabulary learned in the beginners class and incorporating into basic signed conversations.

    • signing speed
    • discussions of ´technical´ signs
    • fingerspelling drills
    • idiomatic expressions

    LEARNER OBJECTIVES:
    This class will advance the skills of those individuals that would like to communicate with people with a hearing or speech disability that utilize Sign Language as their mode of communication. The deaf students and employees in our district that would benefit by more people being able to have a conversation with them
    The participants will partake in activities that will enrich their learning experience.
